Thanks. I saw it as a kid and would like to go back some day. Do you know if finances for preservation are still in bad shape? |

Thanks for the link. The photos are terrific. The Olympia is such a beautiful ship. I saw her about 20 years ago. |

There is a games day held onboard every May on or near the anniversary of Manila Bay. Sometimes with reenactors including a portrayal of Dewey. The proceeds go to the maintenance fund. All in all I think she is in much better shape than the USS Texas. |

Great to hear she's in good shape. I was appalled when there were serious discussions just a few years ago about taking her out and scuttling her. I must try and get over to see the old girl again, last time was in 2002 (time flies!) |

She looks to be in much better condition than when I visited her 50 years ago… |

Loved visiting the Olympia as a kid and also when I was an adult living in Philadelphia. She's a majestic beauty and I hope she stays with us for many years to come. |

Think the talk of her poor finances was fake news. A great museum and an active presevation society. The maritime museum, Olympia and the submarine moored alongside are reason alone to visit Philadelphia.[Heresy alert] I enjoyed more than Victory or Belfast. |

Think the talk of her poor finances was fake news. Dead wrong. One of the former CEOs of the museum embezzled $1.5 USD million and put the Olympia and the museum on the rocks. That both survived is a credit to those who hadto salvage the mess. And Olympia is not out of the woods yet. She is dire need of a $15 USD million docking. |

My mistake. Thanks for the correction. Certainly would have been steadier without the embezzlement. |

Charlie 12 is spot on. The volunteers are the primary reason she hasn't been scrapped yet. See here link As for donations, see phillyseaport.org/support |

Doesn't Philly have any home grown plutocrats to solve the problem? |
Charlie 12 | 01 Apr 2018 3:42 p.m. PST |
Uh, no. It comes down to this: If you're interested in the Olympia's history (no matter where you live), then you're more likely to donate. Its not just up to the residents of Philadelphia to put up the money; everyone has their own interests and causes. This is just one of many. Saying its up to Philadelphia is just silly. |
