Hi all,

I am starting a Cold War gone Hot project. I am wanting to field the 4th Armoured Brigade in 1983, but I am having a real pain on the internet trying to find out the ORBAT for that brigade at that time. I was hoping that some of the fine people of the TMP might know more!?

Thanks in advance!
LS

Armies of NATO's Central Front, pub 1985, has 4th Armoured Brigade as:
HQ York Bks, Munster
mech bn: 1 Irish Guards, Munster
armd rgt: QRIH, Munster
armd rgt: 17/21st Lancers, Munster

The armd rgts might have been receiving Challenger 1s about 1985. Would need to check elsewhere for that.

HQ and 204th Signals Sqn (Munster)
Queen's Royal Irish Hussars (Munster) replaced Mar 1988 by 14th/20th King's Royal Hussars
17th/21st Lancers (Munster) replace Dec 1990 by Royal Hussars
1st Btn Irish Guards replaced Jan 1986 by 1st Btn Grenadier Guards

4th Armoured Brigade converted to Challengers in 1986, so you can't have the Micks and Challengers at the same time.

Watson and Rinaldi's book states (p100) that the 4th Armoured Brigade's conversion to Challengers took place during 1985-86, following the 7th's conversion in 1983-84. This is right for about one regiment per year until the end of the cold war.
I think the 17/21st received their Challengers first- in the spring of 1985.

Thank you all! Exactly what I was needing. I think investment in Watson's and Rinaldi's book will be my next step.

Cheers,

Yes, 17/21 received C1 first, QRIH had it by Summer Sales 1986, the CO's fell through a farm yard into a cellar!

Tally Ho!
