When he arrived, American soldiers had already killed 504 Vietnamese civilians (that's the Vietnamese count; the U.S. Army said 347). They were going to kill more, but they didn't — because of what Thompson did… link |

A real hero. Heard some bits of an interview with him this week. Rare to find such a man who can stand against all comers (even his "own" people) in the service of what's right. The sick ending is that not only did only one man get convicted for the incident, his sentence was commuted to house arrest and he got a top 40 country song written in his honor. |

he got a top 40 country song written in his honor. I think you mean: ' he got a Top 49 country song written in his "honor". ' Calley clearly had none. I'd never heard of Hugh Thompson. Impressive. |

Inspiring man. True hero. Statues should be erected. Apart from Hugh Thompson's heroism and the unbelievable willingness to forgive by the Vietnamese survivors the story sickened me to the core. "Trent Angers, Thompson's biographer and friend, analyzed the list and found about 50 there who were 3 years old or younger. He found 69 between the ages of 4 and 7, and 91 between the ages of 8 and 12." |
