Winston: though generally a huge fan of Mr Cash, I far prefer Lefty Frizzel's version of "Long Black Veil" (which I believe also came first). It's worth a listen if you haven't heard it.

When I was a kid, I had a record called "Cowboy Songs"; it was produced by National Geographic. I liked the entire album but can only remember a few of the song names.
-Streets of Laredo
-The Red River Valley
-Hell in Texas
and a song about Jessie James

M C MonkeyDew19 Mar 2018 11:11 a.m. PST

El Paso is my favorite cowboy themed song.

Streets of Laredo is my favorite period song.

Doesn't anyone care for the "Yellow Rose of Texas?" It may date from the Texas victory over Santa Ana at San Jacinto in ?1836?

Looks like a great Frederick Remington painting of US cavalry of the west, late 1800's.

Stephen Miller25 Mar 2018 8:26 p.m. PST

Garde de Paris,
That painting is actually by Charles Schrevogel who was a contemporary of Remington and also his rival. Schrevogel's paintings are very good, and he, like Remington, collected uniforms and equipment pieces of cavalry gear during trips to the American West, but most of his collection was of things in use in the mid-to-late 80s and 90's so a bit late for most of the Indian Wars. He did most of his actually painting on the roof of his New Jersey apartment building.

Garde de Paris26 Mar 2018 9:47 a.m. PST

He sounds like me in my apartment near Pottstown, Pa, painting battalions of British, Portuguese, Spanish and French for the Peninsular War – but I'm NO artist! and have never been to Spain or Portugal!
