Hello,

Having recently started to raise a Xyston Later Achaemenid Persian army, I was wondering if someone could tell me who makes the crescent-shaped wicker shields seen in the rear ranks of the following picture of Persian Kardakes.

My first guess was Xyston, as that is definitely the manufacturer of the figures themselves, but I can't seem to find a Xyston shield pack that looks quite like these.

Thank you!

Justin

Justin,

Took a close look at the picture with some magnification, and I don't believe that those are "crescents". I believe that they are the "kardakes" shields, which are described as "gerrha" after Xenophon, shown in his detail pic opposite the English translation.

If you click on the pic of his painted troops to enlarge it, you can tell that the shields have double cutouts, similar to other Persian shields. With the larger image, pay particular attention to the back two rows of figures; the 3rd, 4th and 5th figures clearly have double cutouts, as does the last figure, the 8th. On the second to the back row check out figures 4 and 7 and you can see both cutouts.

Hope this helps

Bill

I suspect the shield comes with ANC20056 – Persian Levies in Persian Dress, but I cant say for certain. They are not in their separate shield listing. I seem to recall them having a different shield.

The ANC20056-Persian Levies in Persian Dress come with a crescent shield.

I think the 'double cutout' shield is from the Parthian or Kappadoccian range….I would like some if the can be bought seperatley

Thank you all very much for your help in answering this question! I have contacted Xyston to confirm that ANC20056 (Persian Levies in Persian Dress) does in fact come with the shield seen in the rear ranks of the photo I included above. Once they have confirmed this, I will post a follow up in case anyone else would like to get their hands on some of these shields.

Best,
Justin
