"In December 2017, the third Future Ground Combat Vehicles Summit took place in Detroit, Michigan. The program featured an assortment of unmanned ground vehicles, ranging from robotic mine flails to vehicles that could one day carry electromagnetic railguns — all which promise to revolutionize the way we wage war. The machines are the product of the U.S. Army's efforts to develop robotic weapons that will, as the service's Robotic and Autonomous Systems Strategy states, improve "U.S. forces' ability to maintain overmatch and render an enemy unable to respond effectively." But war-winning robots could prove detrimental to the societies for whom they fight…." Main page link Amicalement Armand |

Very real and very scary stuff here. May we have better sense going forward than we do now. |

Well we know the answer, eventually Skynet starts making their own robots and start a war with their former human masters. |

Humanity's children (Cylon, Skynet or even some variant of the Borg) will replace us eventually. It's inly a matter of time. And we would have given them all the tools to do so. I just hope I'm long dead when that happens. Dan

No robot will get you in his sights and then decide, "I'm just gonna let that one go today." |

Don't worry. Whatever we don't willingly yield over to them, they'll easily take away from us. Dan TMP link |

I'd like to have seen a Squad of T2s inserted into, say an ISIS, AQ, BH, AS or Taliban location … "Game over Boys!" "School's Out !" "Hasta la vista baby !" |

A few thoughts – I read once that the significance of the story of Horatius at the Bridge was not whether it actually happened or that Romans believed it to be true – rather that the Romans taught the story to their children. As noted in the article, not as easy to use examples of robots to inculcate heroism and devotion to duty in a culture. On the other hand, again as noted and as seen as well in the popularity of Keith Laumer's Bolos, humans anthropomorphize machinery regularly. On the topic of using robots in battle itself – robots will be quite expensive and as seen in WWII, technology during a conflict can advance very rapidly making a potentially massive investment obsolescent fairly quickly. Even in peace times potential opponents knowing something of the robots' capabilities will be working to counter them. Besides, just watched 'Battle Drone' with my brother a couple of days ago – a band of mercs will just take them out handily… |

Besides, just watched 'Battle Drone' with my brother a couple of days ago – a band of mercs will just take them out handily… Well we know that is clearly Sci-fi. The UN has pretty outlawed Mercs … so we wouldn't want to upset them. They might send a harshly worded email to the rogue 'bots though … That should work ! Yeah, that's the ticket ! Send an email asking them to not be so mean !!!! |
