… on Napoleon's Head "On 14 June 1800 Napoleon Bonaparte fought his first battle as French head of state at Marengo in northern Italy. Unexpectedly attacked, Napoleon's army fought one of the most intense battles of the French Revolutionary Wars. Forced to retreat, and threatened with encirclement, Napoleon saved his reputation with a daring counterattack, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. This battle consolidated Napoleon's political position and placed the crown of France within his reach. Meticulously researched using memoirs, reports and regimental histories from both armies, Marengo casts new light on this crucial battle and reveals why Napoleon came so close to defeat and why the Austrians ultimately threw their victory away. With the most detailed account of the battle ever written, the author focuses on the leading personalities in the French and Austrian camps, describing the key events leading up to the battle, and the complex armistice negotiations which followed. For the first time, the author exposes the full story of Carlo Gioelli, the enigmatic Italian double agent who misled both armies in the prelude to battle."

"The victory that placed the crown of France on Napoleon's head?" Really? I can argue all day long about why that is simply not true. Marengo did, however, save the Consulate. And I don't think Napoleon assumed the crown of France, which would have been a step down for him. He proclaimed an empire, not a kingdom, and designed his very own crown. I know often author can't control what their publishers do with regard to subtitles, like this one, or whoppers, like that book about being in Spain with Wellington, when Wellington wasn't there for the first half of the book. Nevertheless, historical hyperbole, especially when it's just wrong, irritates me. But keep on keeping on, Armand! |

I think we can take 'crown of France' as a metaphor, but Maggie is right, I reckon the audience for such a book probably has a rough idea what Marengo was. If I was doing their marketing the USP of Marengo would lead me to; Marengo, The battle that Napoleon lost, then won. I wish book retailers would release more info about their product, even a pic of the chapter headings, list of maps, ilos or whatever would give me some idea if the thing is worth my $. USD
Even a few page examples would help… David F Brown |

Tango01 Have you got shares in this forthcoming title? LOL You have already made a thread about it in this board on the 27th Feb-Marengo, on the same day that I made a thread about it-New Napoleonic Battle Book, albeit I never included the name of the battle in topic title. I do hope it is worth it in the end. |
