(NOTE: I didn't want to hijack Vigilant's thread about commemorating next year the 50th anniversary of the first men on the moon, TMP link ) So, if we humans are going to be sending nothing but drones up to the moon from now on in our lifetime, maybe this idea might be of interest to some … Why not game a battle of lunar rovers?
YouTube linkPerhaps you could have your rovers/drones (scratch-built, converted, or bought as is like Hot Wheels/Matchbox) prospecting for ice and other resources, or going around planting flags or setting up commercial billboards on choice spots, but then knocking down each other's work in the process! :) And, every so often, an opponent could try to hack into one of your drones and make it his for one or two turns. How about terrain? What would work best you think? A 2' x 2' pre-printed mat, or perhaps something else with more challenging elevations? Dan link

"Travels at 200m per hour." Make sure you have a nice complicated set of rules so that it plays out in real time :) |

Actually any future war. Let's not discount Nano-Tech. Shlubs in space suits are already an anachronism. |

I'd suggest getting a copy of Rivets, the old microgame or Roborally! |

Hmm…I suddenly have the urge to try modifying Gaslands to a Dronelands variant. Hmmm…. |

We'll, that's certainly appropriate for today's XKCD: xkcd.com/1968 If you don't know the trick, finish reading the cartoon and then hold the mouse cursor over it. (If you mouse it before reading the cartoon, you ruin it.) |

Tsofian: "I'd suggest getting a copy of Rivets, the old microgame or Roborally!" Is this what you have in mind? link

Can you imagine some of these little GZG/Germy guys, perhaps after adding some arms and solar panels*, running around on lunar terrain and erasing the human footprints? link I wonder if these Plastruct lunar terrain sheets could be set down side by side seamlessly:
Dan * Perhaps made using the small 1/16 styrene tile sheet:

It's just a matter of time … before more and more 'bots find their way into most human endeavors. |

Actually any future war. Let's not discount Nano-Tech. I pretty much have to; my position is, while most claims of nano are a bit out there, in the final analysis, either nano y nano is a draw, and we have a regular game to play, or one side will dominate. Shlubs in space suits are already an anachronism. Again, pretty much have to ignore; ANY groppos in near future, assuming advances in AI aren't kiboshed by developers' fear of creating T1s, will not compete. No matter what, games depend on just your level of suspension of disbelief. Robo Rally: Again assuming advances in AI, instead of simple programmed moves, you'd need a system of limited independence, at which point it's pretty close to regular groppo game, right. Doug PS I wonder if these Plastruct lunar terrain sheets could be set down side by side seamlessly… Those look like the ones I have; the edges are flat, so should match up pretty close. Better than some old Sci-Fi Supply I have which wouldn't work nearly as easily. A big board would get 'spensive… ;->= |

Nano bots fighting each other? Check link Cheers, Stroezie. |

Stroezie Those look awesome! What are those amber colored bits? Markers/counters? Dan PS. By the way, I think this next gif is hilarious, though a bit nostalgic. Reminds me of the good old days, back when you could keep whatever you planted your flag on, if you happened to be the first power there: :)
