I need to make up several Icebergs (selective compression) and pieces of Floe Ice for my current naval project. I'm thinking of using cut/carved pieces of insulation foam with a base coating of Woodland Scenics Flex paste prior to painting/sealing. Never done this before so I'm looking for recommendations and suggestions. Thanks in advance for any assistance! |

Your idea wounds good. If you mount the icebergs on something that will help avoid some of the dinging they can get. If you can get pink/blue insulation foam it can be sanded smooth and is a bit more durable than regular packing foam. For floe ice you could use matboard or but from thin basswood. Cardboard should also work but may warp. |

You can cut up any packing foam like they use in packing appliances, TVs and electronics. You can seal it before painting with watered down white glue, like Elmers. If the foam is white, you really don't have to paint it after sealing, but use water-based latex paint. You can water down blue paint to about the consistency of milk and brush it lightly in the low areas of the piece, giving it a bluish hue in the cracks and crevices. It's really up to you how much time you want to spend and what you want the pieces to look like. Have fun and good luck! Post some pics after you're done. |

Striker: thanks – In making notes I completely forgot about bases for the 'bergs and floes. I am going to use insulation not bead packing foam. Mr. Magoo: thanks for the tips! |

Go to Michaels or Joanns or Hobby Lobby and buy sea glass. It's bits of glass that have been tumbled or harvested from the ocean. It looks like ice. It comes in lots of sizes and colors, blue, white, clear, green so it can match your water. Mike Bunkermeister Creek link |
