"There are some military units that are known the world over and just the mention of their name evokes respect and fear, and the US Marine Corps is one of these. So iconic is the USMC that they have captured the name "marine" itself and dominated its definition since the First World War despite not being the oldest Marine corps in the world. That honor goes to the Spanish Navy Marines, founded in 1537. With the nexus of ideas, history, iconography surrounding these marine units, they have become a popular source for inspiration for science fiction space infantry units with the name marine itself being used countless times with varying degrees of accuracy. I thought it was high time to discuss Marine units and cover the relationship between science fiction and the Marines. There will be some bleed over with the previous FWS blogpost on Space Marines…." I think the term Marine in Sci-fi or anywhere else comes from the fact that "Marines" in general deploy off "ships". I.e. sea or space "ships" in this case … In fact many Infantry type units deploy from ships/landing craft, etc. E.g. As we know, the US ARMY, being much larger during WWII did more Amphib Assaults/Beach Landings than the USMC. But again the US ARMY had @ 100 Divs at that time and the USMC @ 6. I will take nothing away from my fellow Grunts who are in the USMC. I was a Grad of USMC/USN Basic Amph Training at Little Creek. When I was with the 101. A number of times while I was in the ARMY we cross-trained/operated with the USMC. Also note the USMC is organized a little bit different from the US ARMY generally … As their "primary" mission is Amph Assault Ops. Plus in the prequel ST series "Enterprise" the Grunts aboard there were call MACOs. No mention of Marines or Army. Just "Military" link But like all Sci-fi … it's just Sci-fi … |
