I'm starting to paint an Anglo Saxon army. I would imagine that the richer troops would have more colorful clothes and the rabble would have browns, tans and greens. I'm I correct? Are there any colors that are no found on Anglo Saxon troops? Thanks for your help. Jim Ferich |

Actually the 'poor' troops would be the pale grey or off white of undyed and often washed wool. Those a bit more up market could have the full range of colours but not very strong while the top of the heap could have solid bright red (which was very expensive) or contrasting cuffs and collars (which were labour intensive). There are several on line sources of dye colours done on wool and linen if you look up 'Viking dyeing' on line. |

I don't think that anyone knows for sure how the clothes looked and how the colors appeared: my advice is to not worry about it too much and go with your idea of the 'nicer' clothes having more colors / cuffs, patterns etc.. and the poorer ones not. That's how I did mine. Having said that, I'd steer clear of purple. : ) |

England was a rich country, comparatively, and people would have worn their best clothes to go to war. If your army represents a later AS (IE Alfred onwards) you may not have very many of the really poor Ceorls in your Fyrd. regia.org is a great site, go to the historical resources tab. |

Don't forget the ever popular and dramatic, black. Recent scholarship has pointed out that this was much in favor with Norse….I don't think that it would be less so with the Saxons. Easy pigment to obtain. |

Well, the Goths are said by some to have originated in Scandinavia. |

My WRG Armies and Enemies say that Anglo-Saxons considered yellow and pale blue as effeminate colours. |

I tried to follow the guide skipper john posted on common, rare etc for my Vikings. But also I looked for contrast and when bored added a good amount of colour. Whatever works for you aesthetically. Actually towards the end I even used a "man salmon" triad from reaper! |
