Have you ever taken a trip on a Mississippi riverboat? |

Had a couple of days in St Louis but the Mississippi was in flood so all boat traffic was suspended. |

As a couple of bored 13-14 year old kids during spring break, a friend and I snuck aboard a riverboat that had been chartered for a private dinner and party. Right about the time the crew started getting suspicious, one of the event waitresses found us, fed us and hid us until it was time to dock back in New Orleans. It was hilarious. Dan |

Yes. The American Queen – largest steam-driven paddle wheeler in operation – is one of the most elegant cruise ship ever. My wife and I did the upper Mississippi in 2013, and the lower Mississippi Last fall. Each cruise was a full week on the river. Rick |

Yes, I went for a trip on a proper steam powered stern wheeler in New Orleans back in the 1990s when I was there with the NWS naval history holiday, steam organ playing whilst we queued up for tickets and went on board. Basically a trip along the river from the city centre to the site of the 1815 battle and back, with several hundred passengers sitting on plastic deck chairs eating fried chicken and fries and drinking beer, most totally oblivious to where they were or what they were seeing (they could have been in KFC). So it was a thoroughly depressing experience until I realised you could go down a flight of steps to the lower deck and walk through the boilers and engines, just down at water level, and back to the paddle wheels. suddenly it became a much more interesting trip. I reckon apart from us Brits there were maybe 2 or 3 others apart from the handful of crew down there appreciating the view, the engineering and the sheer atmosphere of driving a Mississippi steam boat. The crew were really appreciative that we went down to take a look, they said it was extremely rare. |

I looked into it about a year ago. It seemed very expensive. Our daughter paid less for a Carribean cruise than the price I was seeing on a website. I love Mississippi paddle wheel riverboats and was disappointed that it was out of our price range. |

I live in Briton and in 2009 I married I thought 2 bird one stone a romantic trip down the Mississippi and see the States (the land of my father) Hopping to setting out from Pittsburg or St Louis may be and travelling down to New Orleans this my have been a bit ambitious but you can imagine my surprise that it can't be done no vessels no cruise. Most of the great rivers of Europe you can cuisine in luxury it can also be done on the Nile. In the End we did a fly drive honeymoon to New England in the Fall (Autumn). |
