I'll second Rommel for a great higher level WW2 combat game.

Extra Crispy is right on the scale for Panzer Korps. Just be aware though the smallest maneuver element is the battalion. I highly recommend his review.

Also be aware a second edition is in the works.

There is also Kriege Ohne Hass for WW2 and Kalt Kriege Ohne Hass for Cold War.

I agree with some of the comments on Panzer Korps above. I've got Panzer Korps and have tried playing it but it is so badly written with whole chunks of functionality not even described but left to snippets of information in discussion threads on the Yahoo group that I'd say it's a waste of money.

The Canadian Divisional rules, on the other hand, are really great and well written.

MOst of the major commercial ones are listed above, there are also quite a few free ones at that scale. I've used NATO Brigade Commander a lot for WW2, I also liked Lightning War.

The Piquet WW2 set alos uses companhy sized elements I believe.

In pretty well all of them, the companies will be wandering around as part of a battalion. Spearhead was originally designed to use company bases (the WW1 version still does).

Combat Command uses 1 Stand = a Company for Russian INF (except some specialists). But 1 Stand = a Platoon for everything else.

I plan to try Field of Battle but would like to have other options. I have never really liked any of Sam Mustafa's rules. Any free sets to recommend?

I think that I found the definitive discussion of operational rules:
