Don't think I'd enjoy trying to work in that turret! ;-) |

It never went into production, but the pz4 turret wasn't especially cramped for it's time. Crews particularly liked the side escape hatches in hot weather like summer steppes or the desert. The paw was a pretty interesting weapon. The calibre was picked to match the 81mm mortar so existing tooling could be used. |

Interesting model too … But in appears the Germans loved to make hybrid conversions. Even of most only made it to the drawing board. |

Would have made a lot more sense than the behemoths they were planning. What's the story on the 8cm gun? |

The Wikipedia entry is pretty good on the paw: link They invented and this is the first use of the Hi-Low principle. You may be more familiar with the US M79 40mm grenade launcher ( blooper ). Cheaper and half the weight of a pak40 so it's more manoeuvrable by manpower. More HE power because it can use thinner walled projectiles. Short range. Only HEAT for anti tank because it's low velocity. Fast-ish wind up to production of rounds because part of the round was pretty much the 81mm mortar bomb. Variety of ammo because the mortar bomb… Only a few hundred made and opinions differ on how much combat they saw in 45. My understanding is that a fair few made it to various fronts but they're not sexy rockets or whatever so nobody particularly noticed the odd pak was 81mm rather than 75mm. |

When it came to weapons design, in many cases they were quite imaginative at times. But also many were too little, too late. Or never got off the drawing board. And generally overwhelmingly these new weapons would not have made much if any difference in the end. And I too agree with don … this MBT would have been a better "idea" than the E-100, Maus, etc. For a number of reasons. |
