Legend has it that the French strongpoints at Dien Bien Phu were named after Christian de Castries' mistresses.

Which (or who!) is your favorite?

Anne-Marie
Beatrice
Claudine
Dominique
Eliane
Francoise
Gabrielle
Huguette
Isabelle

Well, it's no worse than all of Bill's recent poll/threads.

I vote for Beatrice (Chirita):

Been to long since I read that book in high school, but I'll check back often to see what everyone else thinks.

Bernard Fall dispels that myth though it makes a great story with great pictures. He states that was typical phonetic French language.

So far, EC is winning.

Street Without Joy is a great read …

And yes, I do like EC's "strongpoint" … evil grin

Street Without Joy is a great read …

Yes, it is, as is "Hell in a Very Small Place."

Did you know Bernard Fall was killed on that very 'street without joy' in 1967?

The one being overrun by my Viet Minh.

"Hell in a Very Small Place" is also very well done. And yes, IIRC in '67 he was a journalist, killed on that "street". Forgot how though ?

Huegettes.

Stepped on a mine, I believe. :(

Extra Crispy-
I don't think she was really a strongpoint at Dien Bien Phu. She looks more like a collection of softpoints in the Bikini Atoll.

Sparrowhawk, I like quad .50s.

Favorite strongpoint??
IMHO, 'anywhere' you can dig-in a cpl of Hvy. MG's, a cpl. of Lt/Med, 60 – 81mm mortors and a good trench sys. for your troops. That would be a 'favorite' strong point, when the shells start to fall.grin

The death of that reporter brings to mind Ernie Pyle(?) the combat photographer KIA in the Pacific IIRC.

14Bore,
I find your argument VERY convincing, much more than EC's.

14Bore03 May 2019 5:17 p.m. PST

If nothing else did buy and reread Hell in a Very Small Place.
