blackshawgaming.wordpress.com/2018/03/03/bolt-action In short it is better to roll up to close range and shoot as assault is risky. Lose and your whole unit is gone. Even a 'clear cert' can go down to bad dice. Any defensive fire on the way in will reduce the number of attacks, this will negate the advantage the attacker has of hitting 1st in close combat. If I learn of any mistakes in the rules summary or the maths I will update the post

I agree, better to shoot them down than risk the assault.

Unless, of course, your target is a two person team that manages to go down and then be hit at 7+.
