No, I knew very little of that. An eye opener. And rather shocking.

I did – I have read quite a bit of Mexican history, and the Mexican-American War is not exactly a shining moment in the history of either nation

Very informative, but one must resist the tempation to view and judge through the prizm of modern morality, social pressures, and political corectness.

rmaker02 Mar 2018 4:03 p.m. PST

And of course most of the opposition to the war was due to political differences, not policy.

There was a book on this very subject published, Oh some three or four years ago and it was quite amazing also.

Title escapes me at the moment.

StoneMtnMinis: The problem here is that viewed through the prism of 19th-century morality the war was "one of the most unjust ever waged by a stronger against a weaker nation. … an instance of a republic following the bad example of European monarchies, in not considering justice in their desire to acquire additional territory" – or was Ulysses S Grant prey to 21st-century political correctness when he wrote that?

rmaker; was it really? The various contemporary opinions quoted in the article suggest the opposition was actually grounded in principle.

anyone?: I'd be very grateful if someone could explain to me how to make a snippet from someone else's earlier post appear in a white box in my later reply.

To Fatuus Natural & all TMP'ers:

anyone?: I'd be very grateful if someone could explain to me how to make a snippet from someone else's earlier post appear in a white box in my later reply.

On the TMP home page, left side "TABLE OF CONTENTS", scroll down to the block "Masthead" and click on "Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)".
On that page (The TMP FAQ), click "5. Formatting".
And on that page scroll down just past half way to "Quoting".

Thank you Walking Sailor!

Funny, I'd looked there several times, but somehow never found the section on Quoting. My nom de plume was clearly well chosen.
