Hi All,
I was wondering if any of you could recommend any good sources (books or online sites), for the La petite guerre fought in Westchester County NY during the AWI?
I have Ewald's, Simcoe's, and Tallmadge's memoirs covering their exploits in these operations, but was hoping there might be some other recommended reads you could point me to?

Fenimore Cooper's "The Spy: A Tale of the Neutral Ground?"

If your looking for scenario ideas, pick up a copy of Norman
Desmarais' book, "The Guide to the Revolutionary War in New York" and then find the parts that deal with Westchester.

Hardcopies available on ABE.com

A somewhat more recent, and pricier book
Westchester County During the American Revolution, 1775-1783; Hufeland, 1973

I haven't read either one yet — found in the bibliography from Legends and Lore of Sleepy Hollow and the Hudson Valley, which has a fun chapter on the ghost of Major Andre.

Thank you very much Guys!

miniMo – here's reviews of the Hufeland book you recommended (sounds like the type I'm looking for):

More good recommendations, thanks SF!

(got 3 books coming now)

Hoping to use this setting as the basis for my future AWI gaming (drawing on the interesting/varied units involved, inspired by the innumerable small-formation encounters which occurred, much, over the same localized ground……thinking this is almost "campaign" ready).

'The Grand Forage' is a well-researched, if short, account of a brief period in 1778 dealing with a British foray across the Hudson into the Jerseys to gather supplies for the winter.

It is worth reading but it deals only tangentially with the are due north of York Island/Manahattan- if that is your mai area of interest.

I have enjoyed this book a lot.

Well, now I've got The Grand Forage on order and tagged the other titles suggested here for future possibilities.

My favorite location! When I first moved to Westchester I read and loved the Hufeland book. Lent a copy to a student and never saw it again (do not ever lend books to high school boys). There is a copy in our library. Its a great start. I'll see if I can think of other titles.

A great resource is the McDonald Papers. They are a very large number of interviews conducted by Judge McDonald in the 1840s with Westchester residents who remembered the war. Great stuff. I've never used the online version, but here is the link

NY Irish, thanks for the link!

An interesting article from the website – "Deborah Sampson, Continental Solder: The Westchester Connection":

I've been trying not to pile on too many books at a time, but that trick never works. Was ordering from ABE last night (A People's Army : Massachusetts Soldiers and Society in the Seven Years' War) and grabbed the Hackensack Valley book too since I was already checking out and everything.
