Any recommendations on a good overview on South Africa during Napoleonic Wars and early colonial period pre 1850 – Great Trek, Blood River etc? I've got Mike Snook's excellent books on Cape Warriors, anything other ‘must have' references? |

Fortescue's History of the British Army has lots of details on the actions of…the British Army in the area at this time. Unfortunately for the specialist this is spread out in two or three volumes that also cover what was happening globally during the same period. Trying to remember what I read while researching Blood River. Will post if I can recall. From a historical novel perspective Allan Mallinson's Company of Spears gives a nice feel for the time and place. Sorry I cannot be of more help at the moment. More if it all comes back to me. Bob |

A good account of the Cape Wars is, "Edges Of War" (my copy is buried somewhere) which is heavily illustrated and has good maps. Excellent history of the Khosa people and the Cape Wars. |

I was recently reading Oliver Ransford's Battle for Majuba Hill (which is an amazingly well written book) and found myself too fascinated by the pre 1850 history of South Africa. It really is a fascinating, dynamic period of history with lots of moving part (literally) so your topic Basha is very timely. Also my wife is South African so I have a personal link to the country (was there for 3 weeks in 2017.) Didn't get to Majuba but I will next time!! |

Two more well worth looking at: The Great Trek Uncut by Robin Binckes Kruger's War by Chris Ash The latter is not specifically about the 'early' period of SA history, but does cover it in some depth to explain the origins of the Boer War. |
