"At the Forks in the spring of 1816 the HBC seized and destroyed the North West Company's Fort Gibraltar, by burning it to send a message. Along with being the only two competing fur trading companies this was the start of the dispute.

The Nor' Westers had established trading posts in the Red River Valley and thought of the territory as their own. Lord Selkirk of HBC started the Red River settlement. This angered the Nor' Westers that their were being moved off their land.
The North West Company believed that the settlement was just a way for HBC to gain control of the fur trade area. The Métis became angry and worried that the new farmers would scare away the buffalo (needed for food and clothing).
Painting depicting the Battle of Seven Oaks.
Description: The Fight at Seven Oaks, 1816
Author: Charles William Jefferys
The painting depicts the fight as unfair,
the painter portrays the HBC men to be cowering, unprepared, confused, outnumbered, and a few dead. Whereas the Nor' Westers look strong sitting a top their horses, outnumbering the Hudson's Bay Men.
Battle: a sustained fight between large, organized armed forces…."
