Basic members have posting rights on TMP. In return for that should they have to list their country of residence. Not their city or state, just the country where they live. This would help prevent trolling and allow the rest of the membership to understand their posts and opinions better.

So, the question:

For the privilage of a Free Basic membership and the rights it gives, Basic Members will have to list their country of residence.

A. Yes
B. No

Cerdic28 Feb 2018 12:41 p.m. PST

Can't see it would make much difference. So, no.

Winston Smith28 Feb 2018 12:44 p.m. PST

Why, when I can lie about it?
I see no need at all to place any kind of information on the net, anywhere.

If I say I'm from Hither Slobbovia, am I more or less likely to troll?

lloydthegamer Supporting Member of TMP28 Feb 2018 1:01 p.m. PST

No point in listing country of origin. As Winston pointed out, if a guy is a troll he'll be lying anyway.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP28 Feb 2018 1:08 p.m. PST

Hither Slobbovia maybe. But surely no one from Lower Slobbovia would admit to it? And they'd have to be basic members, because no one could possibly get to be a supporting member by paying in Slobbovian Rasbuckniks.

Just do what I do: think the worst of everyone, and assume all uncorroborated information is a lie.

Joes Shop Supporting Member of TMP28 Feb 2018 1:10 p.m. PST

No, can't see the point and agree with the statements above.

Dynaman878928 Feb 2018 1:20 p.m. PST

I have mine listed and still say no.

bruntonboy28 Feb 2018 1:40 p.m. PST

No, its irrelevant. Someones opinion isn't worth any more or less depending on his place of origin or of his current abode.

David Manley28 Feb 2018 1:56 p.m. PST

Is there a suggestion that trolls tend to come from particular countries?

daler240D28 Feb 2018 1:59 p.m. PST

The site often doesn't even have a basic search function, you can't post pictures on it and is buggy as anything and you want to give requirements for using it? Haha. I'd sooner go back to using MySpace.

Personal logo ochoin Supporting Member of TMP28 Feb 2018 2:16 p.m. PST

allow the rest of the membership to understand their posts and opinions better.

I'm trying to fathom how a person's origin might shape their wargaming preferences & I just can't find a connection.

So No.

daler240D28 Feb 2018 2:19 p.m. PST

"I'm trying to fathom how a person's origin might shape their wargaming preferences"

I assume that was ironic!!

goragrad28 Feb 2018 2:25 p.m. PST

I even have my county of residence listed and would have added the city had it asked and as stated above – no.

bobspruster28 Feb 2018 2:32 p.m. PST

I wonder if the idea is to be able to figure out when an individual uses English as a second language. Or to identify individuals who speak English, but have problems with the written word.

Personal logo ochoin Supporting Member of TMP28 Feb 2018 2:39 p.m. PST

@ bob.

but have problems with the written word.

Yes but native English speakers don't always make their meaning clear either.

Personal logo StoneMtnMinis Supporting Member of TMP28 Feb 2018 2:49 p.m. PST

Well, this certainly stirred the hornets nest. grin

deephorse28 Feb 2018 3:38 p.m. PST

Why not just remove the posting rights of Basic members? Problem solved since the assumption seems to be that any trolling or failure to get your message across is simply a matter of being a Basic member who has hidden their country of residence.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP28 Feb 2018 3:45 p.m. PST

"Is there a suggestion that trolls tend to come from particular countries?"

Yes. Mordor, mostly.

MajorB28 Feb 2018 3:46 p.m. PST

What's the point?

Ragbones28 Feb 2018 3:48 p.m. PST

no Robert

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP28 Feb 2018 3:59 p.m. PST

I posted my real name, state and country. And pretty forthcoming about myself within the context of the site, topic, etc. I really don't have anything to hide.

Unfortunately I didn't realize that there would be such a plethora of trolls/frolls, etc., on a site about playing with toy soldiers ! huh? LOL ! laugh

But I clearly see my assumptions were wrong … frown evil grin

Oberlindes Sol LIC Supporting Member of TMP28 Feb 2018 4:15 p.m. PST

I'd be OK with listing star system of origin, but not the specific planet, asteroid, moon, or artificial station or satellite.

There are those with good reason to preserve anonymity. They might have the death sentence in twelve systems, for example.

Old Contemptibles28 Feb 2018 4:39 p.m. PST

No

I don't see how this could help.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP28 Feb 2018 4:43 p.m. PST

I never considered that Oberlindes … Good point !

foxweasel28 Feb 2018 5:08 p.m. PST

Most trolls come from Thule, by a strange coincidence that's where I'm from as well. Country of origin has nothing to do with attitude, otherwise all Englishmen would agree that we are actually God's chosen people. But they don't, some actually prefer America😨

Bravo Two Zero28 Feb 2018 5:49 p.m. PST

Will there be an option for a "ratchet Becky"? Because that would be my choice.

Ok. I am sorry.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP28 Feb 2018 6:31 p.m. PST

I hope we're not going to descend into "troll bridge" jokes, because those always get my goat.

And if anyone asks, I'm from Jekkara Old Town--well above the current level of the canal.

Cyrus the Great28 Feb 2018 10:21 p.m. PST

No.

Fatuus Natural01 Mar 2018 12:25 a.m. PST

No, because it's pointless and unnecessary. It's usually possible to get a good idea of a member's nationality (which I suspect is the real purpose of this suggestion) from the content of his or her posts – the writing style, vocabulary, incidental personal references to places and events, national myths advanced as fact, even the choice of nom de plume.

What would be more instructive than place of residence would be disclosure of each member's level of educational attainment, especially with regard to qualifications in history and related subjects. But of course people would lie about that, too.

And what would be interesting would be an explanation of the meaning of the chosen nom de plume – some are obvious, but others are quite opaque and pique my curiosity.

And what would be truly interesting would be full disclosure of the motivation behind this proposal!

Personal logo ochoin Supporting Member of TMP01 Mar 2018 2:58 a.m. PST

the meaning of the chosen nom de plume

A fair enough idea. Perhaps everyone on this thread could explain their Nom du Guerre?

I'll start. "Ochoin" is a Scots' Gaelic exclamation roughly equating to , "Dearie me" or some such. My sainted Grannie was fond of it.

OK daler240D, deephorse, StoneMtminis, OberlindesSol LIC & others, your turn. I'm curious too.

(I think several such as Lloydthegamer & Jim Selzer probably don't need much explanation).

Fatuus Natural01 Mar 2018 3:06 a.m. PST

Mine is easily explained by googling it – 'fatuus natural' is medieval Latin for 'congenital idiot'. Which, of course, I am.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP01 Mar 2018 4:17 a.m. PST

"Robert" means "bright with glory." It is presumably ironic. But no one knows what "Piepenbrink" means.

jaztez01 Mar 2018 5:38 a.m. PST

Why on earth would putting your country of residence prevent trolling? And how would you prove it?

Seems a hopelessly naive idea.

deephorse01 Mar 2018 5:39 a.m. PST

Mine comes from something I was called by a work colleague many years ago. She was trying to describe me and somehow mangled "deep" and "dark horse" into "deephorse". But surely StoneMtnMinis is glaringly obvious ochoin?

jaztez01 Mar 2018 5:39 a.m. PST

Isn't saying you stirred the hornets nest trolling and the exact behaviour you've suggested it would stop?

Cerdic01 Mar 2018 5:41 a.m. PST

According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Cerdic was the founder of the Kingdom of Wessex sometime in the early 6th Century. There is much disagreement about the dates, and even his existence.

I prefer to think that there is a kernel of truth in there somewhere, and he was a real person!

Why did I choose that name? Delusions of grandeur maybe….

Vigilant01 Mar 2018 6:05 a.m. PST

Since you have to get your e-mail verified to be allowed to post what purpose would this serve? Or is this another case of Supporting Member superiority complex? By the way my handle is the type of aircraft I flew teaching kids to fly.

Personal logo etotheipi Sponsoring Member of TMP01 Mar 2018 7:34 a.m. PST

Slobovia only has one "b" in the English transliteration.

The Slobs are much less likely to troll than other people unless the topic is the border nation of Jerkwadistan (yherk-WAHD-ee-stahn).

I disagree with some of the above statements, trolls, like other social malcontents, are fairly evenly distributed across the human population regardless of national origin (or a bunch of other things I could list). This is why I just assume everyone is a misanthrope and allow their behaviour to make me occasionally pleasantly surprised.

When I am curious about a poster I click the link for their profile. If they've listed where they're from, I am wiser. If they haven't, I know they value their privacy.

I've listed my real name, country, state, city. (I actually used to post here under my real name but changed to a handle.)

My handle "CeruLucifus" is pidgin Latin for "Blue Light Guy". Years ago at a LAN party I couldn't think of a good handle, and I had built and was showing off a gaming PC with glowing blue fans and keyboard. Lighted PCs were a novelty at the time. I've used that ever since.

I just blame the French.
Its easier…… And just as accurate.
