Maybe I spelled it wrong, but anyone have any ideas about troop types and lists for this period and place? Thanks in advance. Ed |

Well the stereotype is light cavalry on small but sturdy horses. Leather armour with perhaps a steel cap or helmet. Armed with lance, sword and a brace of pistols. THe family stronghold would be a tower dwelling with no entrance on the ground. Usual recommendation for this is to read "The Steel Bonnets" by George MacDonald Fraser |

Wargames Illustrated ran aseries of 3 articles on this very topic. Hurcheon summarized well but you could also add foot troops armed and armoured the same, some with bows and the odd 'rifle' If there are some Elizabethan army lists available, they could give you some pointers too. Just started the penultimate chapter of steel bonnets last night! HTH Alan |

Osprey has a book on the subject, with some (as always) colourful Angus McBride pictures. |

"read "The Steel Bonnets" by George MacDonald Fraser" And follow it up with 'The Candlemas Road', his novel for which the research that led to 'The Steel Bonnets' was done. |

The list should simply be a collection of bizarre names attached to ill-tempered men with skin conditions. What more could you want? |

Hmm, I'm also in the last 30 pages of "Steel Bonnets". If I were going to Historicon this year I would probably be stopping by the Brookhurst table and doing a serious book lead purchase. Rich |

There are also the clan societies, if you want to follow up that angle – unfortunately, my maternal ancestors the Eliots, had a little fire in 1704, which destroyed all the documents! |

These were armed robbers. I think the furthest their ToE went was: "I feel like stealin' some coos. Who's in? Big Wullie? Little Wullie? Fat Wullie? Red Wullie? Black Wullie? Polka Dot Wullie? Oh no, he's just been arrested for the Eskdale job." |
