planned to post on tank.net seems to be gone now
if this question posted here already, sorry search function here does not work for me
question during the first gulf war usmc m60a1 engaged iraqi t72s and had no difficulty penetrating the t72 armor
ok these tanks were monkey models .if they were genuine t72 or t72a Russian models how well would the m60 (m68/l7) 105mm have fared/ also what was the tank round used at that time?

we trained that we could not kill a T72 from the front with the 105mm. Gulf War changed that view quickly. I think that Soviet version would have fared the same.

The arrival of improved ammunition in the early to late 80's made all the difference. The silver bullet (depleted uranium) worked very well.

I believe they were T72M1s which was the export version. I saw them up close during Desert Storm and they looked like T72s to me. Apparently they didnīt have the BDD armor so they had less effective armor. So I would guess that the 105 had no issues killing them.

I was trained on M1IPs which had the same 105 and we were told that the SABOT would kill anything the Soviets had. It might take an extra round, but it would kill them at any reasonable engagement range- say 1800m which was basically a boresight engagement. But then again, that was for Germany where ranges would be really short so who really cares about 2000+ meter engagements? I hear a lot of gamers grumble about short ranges in games like Team Yankee. However ranges in Germany were expected to be short! With treelines, hills and villages everywhere to break up LOS.

Saudi was a totally different story and I was on a M1A1 by that time. We had no trouble at all killing anything the Iraqis had at ANY range. I remember that there was a M1IP battalion in Desert Storm and I donīt recall anyone saying that they had trouble with the T72, but maybe they didnīt encounter them??? T55s (and their Chinese clones) and T62s made up the bulk of the Iraqi armor force and they were just target practice for us. We spotted them with our sights and thermals WAAAAAAAAAYYYYY before they saw us and in a tank duel it does come down to who gets the first shot off… usually.
