Does anybody have a good method for painting plaids and/or tartans. I recently dug out some old Reaper Highlanders the other day and am painting them as a diversion from scads and scads of Skaven.

Go to "Painting Mesage Board" and search for "tartans". You will find at least 5 threads on the topic.

Thanks for that link Pare Bellum, I've been holding back on painting up some ancestral Gordon Highlanders for fear of screwing up the tartan.

One thing the sites in those links dont seem to mention is that many of the vertical stripes were hidden within the folds or pleats in the back of the kilt.

Also, in at least some of the regiments, I believe, grenadiers had thin red vertical and horizontal stripes over the basic plaid.

From illustrations in Uniforms of Waterloo in Colour, it appears there were about 3 or 4 horizontal stripes in the average kilt. (that showed beneath the jacket, anyway)

It's been a long time since I painted Highlanders, but I remember it was quite a challenge (not just the plaid, but also the "diced" socks and bonnet), but, if you do a good job, something to be proud of when its done.

Agreed. Trtan is easy. Dicing drives me up the wall. Thus my 100 club Eureka "Highlanders in Campaign Dress" for the FIW. No hose, leggings!

John,
do you have some pics of your painted FIW highlanders, by chance.

Cheers

I've got some pictures of painted 25mm Highlanders in various tartans here, for inspiration:

The Historical gallery has most of these.

Ok, been awhile, but I'm currently painting these (highlanders for Waterloo) in 15mm. Most of these site would work in 25mm or greater. Any ideas on painting the smaller figures? Any pictures?

TIA,

Madcam

Does anyone have pictures of 15mm highlanders with tartan?
