Do you paint minis with enamel paints?

Extrabio1947 Supporting Member of TMP20 Feb 2018 4:27 p.m. PST

Haven't used enamels in over 30 years. Never plan to again.

I based coat metal with enamel. But all the rest of the painting is acrylic …

Winston Smith20 Feb 2018 4:33 p.m. PST

I use some, like Flat Brown, as a horse color.

GurKhan20 Feb 2018 4:34 p.m. PST

Used to, many years ago. Then for a while I used enamels for metallics, and enamel dark earth on the bases, when painting the rest in oils. Now, just Humbrol white for the undercoat.

Ragbones20 Feb 2018 5:07 p.m. PST

Not since I tried to paint some Der Kriegspielers more than 50 years ago. Oh, the horror.

Bashytubits20 Feb 2018 5:14 p.m. PST

Not since the 70s.

Yuppers, but they don't work as well as they used to after several rounds of various ingredients being banned.

Striker20 Feb 2018 5:16 p.m. PST

I used to use it for my 6mm vehicles but now only use enamels for spraying, usually 1/35 but sometimes 1/2400 ships and 6mm. Once I use mine up I probably won't buy more.

DisasterWargamer Supporting Member of TMP20 Feb 2018 5:28 p.m. PST

Not since the early 80s

pmwalt20 Feb 2018 5:51 p.m. PST

Still use them when I can

rustymusket20 Feb 2018 6:20 p.m. PST

Not since I was in my twenties. That was a long time ago.

Rich Bliss20 Feb 2018 6:22 p.m. PST

Not since my first Traveller figures when I was 16

Garand20 Feb 2018 6:29 p.m. PST

Only a few colors for very specialized roles. Like enamel gold (acrylics just don't do as good a job). Even for 1/35 model building I use acrylics now. Less toxic.

Damon.

JimSelzer20 Feb 2018 6:50 p.m. PST

not any more Started with testor's and humbrol's in the day (1974)

KSmyth20 Feb 2018 7:24 p.m. PST

The only enamels I used the last 20 years or so were the Testors aircraft enamels, but I've replaced even those

skaran20 Feb 2018 10:05 p.m. PST

I just use them for an undercoat, normally sprayed on but even this is becoming less and less as I now primarily use acrylics

rmaker20 Feb 2018 10:18 p.m. PST

No.

ZULUPAUL Supporting Member of TMP21 Feb 2018 4:09 a.m. PST

Not for a long time.

Joes Shop Supporting Member of TMP21 Feb 2018 5:38 a.m. PST

Yes, still use them priming and base coating 1/1200 & 1/2400 Ships and 20mm Armor / Vehicles. I airbrush and while I use some acrylics I never have to deal with tip dry when using enamels.

I've been using Testors Model Master Enamels since the early 80's.

jaztez21 Feb 2018 5:57 a.m. PST

Why would you?

Vigilant21 Feb 2018 6:18 a.m. PST

Not since acrylics became widely available. Switched from Humbrol enamels to acrylics when the range came in, then switched to Vallejo. Less smell and easier to clean up.

Ceterman21 Feb 2018 7:38 a.m. PST

Not since the 80's.

Patrick Sexton Supporting Member of TMP21 Feb 2018 9:00 a.m. PST

Not since the early 1980s.

IronDuke596 Supporting Member of TMP21 Feb 2018 10:19 a.m. PST

Yes, I belive the pigments are much better than acrylics.

MajorB21 Feb 2018 1:03 p.m. PST

I use enamel paint as a primer.

Timmo uk21 Feb 2018 2:39 p.m. PST

I don't use them for figures but I still use Humbrol Enamel for basing purposes.

Old Contemptibles21 Feb 2018 3:22 p.m. PST

Not since late 70s or early 80s.

Gennorm23 Feb 2018 11:46 a.m. PST

Not since I first tried acrylics over 20 years ago.

Howler24 Feb 2018 8:36 p.m. PST

Nope

DOUGKL26 Feb 2018 6:32 p.m. PST

Same as many others not since the early 80's. With limited painting time acrylics are much faster to work with.

per ardua20 Apr 2018 1:42 p.m. PST

I still use about 50-50 enamels -acrylics. Especially now that I know how to use thinners with them.
I only ever use brushes too. Both types have there merits.

The Tyn Man28 Apr 2018 4:37 p.m. PST

I still use enamels. I find the acrylics dry way to fast when I do real fine work, and screw up my brushes. I use artist acrylics as a wash or if I can't find a colour in enamels.

I think some of my paints are over 30 yrs old, and still work great….

I can do shading with them that won't work with acrylics again because they dry too fast.

Get some flow extender or dry retarder.
