…Self-Defense If you live in a somewhat dangerous neighborhood … (smile)
"The sword has been a brutally effective weapon for thousands of years, but try to find instruction on using one for self-defense today and you're liable to find nothing but books written by dojo-dwelling, gi-wearing martial artists hung up on ancient traditions and picture-perfect stances. For the modern sword aficionado looking for real-world advice, author and pragmatic martial artist Phil Elmore wipes the slate clean with Street Sword. Despite attempts by elitists to romanticize, deify or otherwise elevate it into a mystical artifact, Elmore treats the sword like a tool for delivering force, period. It is a mundane object that obeys the laws of physics, just like any other weapon. Street Sword will give you a framework in which to use the sword as a functional, practical weapon in today's violent world, quickly providing an understanding of the simple physics involved, as well as concepts like timing and distance. Reading this book won't help you win a colored belt or an Olympic fencing medal, but it may be invaluable if a knife-wielding thug ever comes crawling through your bedroom window one dark night" Main page link

Use the sharp pointy bit on em. Or whack them with the hilt….you can give me my 5 bucks now. |

I myself always prefer to bring a gun to a sword fight. |

Sharp, stabby things have quite an intimidation factor. I have one handy in my house, should I ever need to use it… :-) |

a short aluminum t-ball bat works wonders. its light, and wieldy inside of a house, add my strobing flashlight headlamp and that's done. Of course a pistol or defense shotguns work wonders. you don't even have to shoot someone with the pump shotgun. if they are in the house and hear it, the sound is quite distinctive. |

A sword has a few points in its favor, besides the one at the tip. 1. It is silent and doesn't upset the neighbors. 2. You never run out of ammunition. 3. It's longer than a knife. 3. It doesn't have to be fed. 4. You don't have to take it for walks. |

The last aspect is not a flaw. I like taking my dog out for a walk. Intimidates the neighbors. |

General Kirchner, With 30 plus years of law enforcement experience I will say your comment about the pump shotgun is wrong. All pumping that action does is give away your location. If it is a fighting tool then it should have already have one in the chamber, otherwise you just dumped a live round on the floor. If you pull a weapon on a criminal, you had better not be bluffing. You better have trained well and be prepared to fight. If you live in a jurisdiction that prohibits firearms for self defense, I bet it will also prohibit the use of swords. When you are fighting for your life you want the best tool available. Swords? Wow. |

Storing a shotgun with round in the chamber is the behavior of a fool. |

I'm no expert, but a sword would seem to be a poor indoor weapon to me. unless your home has a great hall or something similar. You need room to swing it, you see. Also, when hit by a long, sharp blade, a body tends to bleed. A lot. So factor that into your decision, too, if you want to swing a sword around indoors. Get ready to call Stanley Steemer, or just buy new furnishings. Attila: I'll agree with you on points 2-4. Point one, however, is slightly inaccurate. The sword itself may be silent, but anyone you hit with it is unlikely to be. :) Agonized screaming may irk your neighbors after all. |

Also, did you see the PRICE for that book? That has to be a misprint, right???? |
