Can someone assist in clarification of how Berserkers 'Double Attack' works in these rules?

For instance, do the Berserkers roll two dice against the defender with the player selecting the better of the two rolls? Or are there two separate rolls 1 vs 1 ?

If the latter, if the Berserkers roll say an 8 and the defender a 4…..usually this would be a One wound/ 4" retreat result…..does this mean the second attack does not take place as the units are no longer in contact? Or are the results of both attacks added together, so that if the first roll was 8 vs 4 and the second roll was 3 vs 8….then each unit would suffer one wound and the Berserkers would retreat 5" and the defender 4"?

Thanks for the help.
