Iran's foreign minister said on Sunday the shooting down of an Israeli jet after it bombed an Iranian site in Syria had shattered Israel's "so-called invincibility", reacting to a critical speech delivered earlier by Israel's premier… link |

Israel doesn't need to invincible. It just needs to be better than its neighbours. The difference between Iran's war against Iraq and the US ones suggests Iran isn't close to Israel's level. |

When was there a "myth of invincibility" for Israel, or any other country in that volatile part of the world? Seriously, the amount of hot air coming out of those ministers and leaders in Tehran seems a bit overwhelming at times. Is that how they really speak, or is their drama somehow terribly magnified in the translation? Dan |

I though Israel's "myth of invincibility" was shattered by the Yon Kippur war. |

Pan Marek yeah but for the Air Force at least it got a boost over the Lebanon in 1982. Fatman |

Israel doesn't have to be invincible, it only has to be better than its' enemies. |

Israel maintains an aura of invincibility in the region for deterrence. If she can make her enemies believe that she is militarily strong enough to the point of being "invincible," then no one would dare threaten her existence. Likewise, Israel's predilection towards "overreaction" and "overkill" in responding to provocations is carefully calculated to maintain this image. |

Actually, I wouldn't view any of Israel's military responses as "overreaction" or "overkill". If the terrorists are daed they can't hurt you. Makes good sense to me. |

amazing how excited they get about shooting down a plane. Like its the first one, ever. Is it more of a miracle for a stone to speak or a politician to shut up? |

The shootdown was a fluke. Even a bad dice roller gets a "6" if he rolls enough times. They got lucky: link All it did was bring the wrath of the IAF (Israeli, not Iranian) down upon their air defense network. It probably cost the Syrians more financially than the Israelis. But they're trying to score propaganda points. The "myth of invincibility" is intact. |

So we're reduced to believing the utterances of the Iranian Foreign Minister now?! Wow! We have sunk low! |
