…blunder' "Hawaii's false alarm about an incoming ballistic missile. Israel's downing of an Iranian drone, and the subsequent Syrian downing of an Israeli jet. The U.S, bombing of Russian fighters in Syria. All happened in 2018, and any could have relatively swiftly sparked a major new confrontation. An insistent alarm is being raised over the rising probability the world will trip into its next major conflict rather than deliberately march into it. Miscalculations, accidents, or plain old human error — they're an inevitable consequence of human interaction on the global stage and there are often channels to deal with them to prevent escalation…" Main page link Amicalement Armand |

55th- "…but two names come to mind" Could they be "Ignorance" and "Want"? 'Spirit. are they yours.' Scrooge could say no more. 'They are Man's,' said the Spirit, looking down upon them. 'And they cling to me, appealing from their fathers. This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware them both, and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing be erased. Deny it.' cried the Spirit, stretching out its hand towards the city. 'Slander those who tell it ye. Admit it for your factious purposes, and make it worse. And abide the end.' Because human error has been to blame for some of these events, we're going to automate everything. And once the defense system becomes sentient it will decide to rid itself of the pesky humans. That, or some politician will get the idea that his side can 'win' a war, and then start one. |

Not so sure we will blunder into a major stat vs state conflict via accident of the OOPS kind. Too many safeguards and layers in the loop. But an accident that a politician miscalculates his/her state's chances are good. Actually, I think greater chance that a leader will see that his chances for success or survival are fading and take actions that can't be backed away from. |

The probability is greatest with the "second tier" nuclear armed countries. Indian sub-continent, Korean peninsula, or Mideast to name a few potential areas. |

Just a guess … Iran (Shia) vs Saudis/Pakistan (Sunnis). Though also Sunni, Turkey* and ISIS may end up throwing their lot against the Saudis and their allies, looking to benefit in one form or another. And if no "infidels" get anywhere within sight of that mess, the two sides might just focus all the aggression on each other. Should Pakistan launch any nukes against Tehran, game over for Pakistan. But if any "Western" nation helps or intervenes, the two sides of the mess will put aside their differences temporarily, and then will focus all their rage against the "infidels" (including Israel). Dan * If Assad is removed before this chaos happens, then Turkey might look for a way to partition Syria with Iran, taking over all territories occupied by Syrian Turks. |

blunder 'fire one' ..and that is with everyone speaking the same language. Things will get 'lost in translation' when foreign powers speak with each other. |

The White House chief of staff getting into a scuffle with a Chinese security official over the nuclear football? Good for the Chief of Staff. I wouldn't mess with a retired Marine 4 star General. |

"The White House chief of staff getting into a scuffle with a Chinese security official over the nuclear football?" Yeah, that "chinese security official" grew up playing the wrong version of "football" and paid for it. |

People stupidity. Egos The need for weapons sellers and their clients to find renewed sales. The inability of too many, especially in a position of inflence, of understanding the history, and in depth geopolitics limits of other countries, ( or people as not everyone has a country) wanting to spread their "model" on others. |

This talk of a "nuclear football" reminds me a little of The Mouse That Roared. Hmm, is that where the phrase originated? Dan
