Does anyone make a 15mm scale turret-less Stuart recce sometimes called a Kangaroo? The recce was a cut down Stuart which produced a lower silhouette and also allowed the mounting of up to three machine-guns on the former turret ring. They appear first in North Africa at the close of the campaign but then appear in Italy and N.W. Europe.

One of their uses in NW Europe was to spray ditches with machine-gun fire during an advance to discourage bazooka and panzerfaust crews.

Does anyone make a model of it?

I've not seen one, but have converted a few using the Skytrex model as a basis.

I custom built a few using the leftover hull and suspension bits from the PSC Stuarts. All I had to do was fill in the turret opening and add a commander and HMG. A strip of cardboard provided the missing lower hull.

Don't think they were called Kangaroos. That was an APC based on medium tank hulls. Everything I've read just refers to them as Stuart Recce.

Battlefront has both the stuart conversion kit and RAM Kangaroos.

I usually see this modification called "jalopying."

Yup they were usually referred to as Recce or Jalopies. The Kangaroo was a totally different animal usually a Canadian Ram tank chassis converted to an APC.

I just made little drop-ins for my PSC Stuarts, with a commander bust and a pintle-mount 50 cal: turret comes off, drop-in drops in.

If I can correct everyone the name Kangaroo WAS applied to the Stuart but incorrectly as it was not used much as a troop-carrier but rather a recce or artillery tractor.

See: link

The Stuart is mentioned twice, in the first paragraph as an artillery tractor but in the last as an APC.

See also here: link

The Kangaroo name may also have been back-applied to the Stuart after genuine Kangaroos appeared.

I believe any turretless tank used as an APC was referred to as a 'Kangeroo'at the time, just as any sort of SP 17pdr was called a 'Firefly' (even when it was actually an Achilles or Archer).

Anyway, turretless Stuarts are v. easy to make.

1. lift off turret.
2. make a replacement to drop in out of card with a couple of spare heads and an MG stuck to it.

to make a Sherman/Stuart Kangeroo as opposed to a Jalopy, just use more heads.

Has anyone ever modelled the Yugoslav conversions of the Stuart where they replaced the turret with a German quad 20mm AA gun or a 75mm PaK? I've been tempted, but never done it.
