"Pakistan is sending troops to ally Saudi Arabia on a "training and advise mission", the military said, three years after it decided against sending soldiers to join the Saudi-led military intervention in Yemen.

The exact role the troops will play was unclear, but a statement from the army's press wing on Thursday stressed they "will not be employed outside" the kingdom.

Pakistan's retired army chief, General Raheel Sharif, commands the new Saudi-led Islamic military alliance to fight terrorism, though it was not immediately clear whether the new troops would participate in that coalition…."

There has been a Pakistani Infantry Brigade in Saudi Arabia since at least the 1980's.

Think of the Saudis as belonging to the rich upper class who don't get their hands dirty in the trenches. Those who do "fight" do so only as fighter pilots or pull strings from behind the scenes.

Just another mercenary army bought by the Saudi's. The USA has served that function in the past; protecting the Kingdom in 1990 from possible invasion from Iraq.

And how were we rewarded exactly? By providing most of the 9/11 hjackers?

True. The Saudi government wanted us there, but not their people. Maybe should have let Saddam take the whole region. Saddam was an evil tyrant, but he was not a religious extremist. We could have done business with him; or assassinated him at some point and install one of his generals. (Thank God I'm not in charge ;-)

Y'all are forgetting one other reason Pakistani soldiers might be in Saudi: Delivering a few nukes.

They would be in violation of the nonproliferation treaty if they did.

Wow. Now there's the makings of a movie or a spy drama episode or two! Or maybe a whole new franchise.
