Hi all I have posted pictures of the 7th Hussars wearing the uniform worn at Waterloo as they were the only \french Hussar regiment on the field-The rest were away with Grouchy.

Love the red overalls and especially the green shakos rouleaux.

But also the background, which sets the figures off so well in photography

My favourite French hussar unit, probably because of the Musee de l'Armee uniform of Marbot (even if the dolman and pelisse have faded from Green to dark blue, due to UV light?)

As you say, this was one unit that could have just changed history on 18th June, by heading a little further East and delaying the Prussians. The roads were bad enough for von Bulow's lads, without being harassed by light cavalry as well. One of many a what if?

Lovely work as usual Paxx!

deadhead – yes a few battalions of infantry and a regiment of cavalry could have held up Von Bulows 4th Corp long enough for Napoleon to win.

Wonderful. What a great looking unit.

Can I just ask (anyone) – where were the 7th at Waterloo? Were they in the thick of Ney's charges or were they off scouting somewhere?

Forgive my ignorance!

Absolvo te……your penance is……..etc

( I had an Irish RC upbringing……)

They were the most easterly (ie right) placed unit of Napoleon's left wing at "Waterloo". They were sent out when the first worry was that there just might be some Prussians…in small numbers hopefully……..trying to spoil the whole thing.

They were way, way, out on Boney's right wing therefore. All on their own.

Facing the Bois de Paris. Looking into the woods that Blucher's Army might just emerge from (OK Bulow's 4th Corps of). But not into the woods…big mistake….even for cavalry.

The whole point is that if they had gone a bit further east, just what they might have achieved. Imagine the marching the Prussians had already done, even if Bulow's lads had not seen action yet……the mud and the inclines, surprising for Belgium unless you have been there…….the congestion and awful staff work on tiny 19thC roads………..

A dozen skirmishers with carbines would have caused hours of delays. A Light Cavalry Regt……………the 4th Corps would never have got there before dark.

More than one recent writer has excused Marbot and his unit, suggesting that the fault was in the Staff and their orders.

Thanks Deadhead. I would love to have some 7th Hussars but unless they were up against the Brits I can't justify it! Too many other unfinished projects piling up!
