I have purchased some Curteys (Ist Corps) Militia or Early Volunteers. Now they have them on their web site with Shakos and painted so no problem. But I also have some exactly the same with eppaulettes as the above but with kepis. Does anyone know if these would be painted the same, i.e. did soldiers in a unit wear different head wear, or does anyone know of any good uniform colours for a unit with eppaulettes and kepis?

Thanks.

Early war volunteers allow you a lot of leeway – there were some units with each company having a different uniform as they were raised from pre-war militia companies. I would say you could use the same colour scheme – I will see if I have any other suggestions in my library at home tonight

In the early days of the war, you had a number of Confederate regiments where each company had a different uniform. For example, the Clinch Rifles of Augusta, Georgia in their distinctive early war green uniforms formed Company A of the 5th Georgia. And the Louisiana Tiger Zouaves, beloved by ACW gamers, formed only one company of Wheat's Special Battalion.

Most militia companies that wore fringed epaulettes did so as part of a full dress uniform that also included a shako. However, I feel confident that most of these regiments also had a kepi or fatigue cap they wore on occasion, so a mix of headgear wouldn't be uncommon.

If your getting into the ACW then I would recommend investing into some uniform books it is a good investment.
