The allies and partners have recognized the value of the four Aegis guided-missile destroyers based out of Rota, Spain, in providing that defense.

"We need more of these ships," Foggo said.
"We need more forward presence."

Not surprised.

The Med doesn't need more US ships provoking a build up.

Would not the extended LCS class be perfect for this role? I mean there is little it can do in open ocean so why not put it into the fairer waters of the Med?

I will ask my now routine question:
Who's paying for it?

Cacique Caribe15 Feb 2018 12:54 p.m. PST

Lol, just print more, like the last few administrations. Or use pixie dust.

Seriously though, it's interesting how suddenly some people are so concerned about spending now, after keeping quiet while so many trillions were being added to the national debt. Makes one wonder. :)

Dan.

Cut welfare. That ought to pay for several ships. And maybe some people would have to go to work, and wouldn't be around to cause trouble.

Our NATO allies can damned well find their own checkbooks and pay for their own navies.

Gotta agree with Carne68 on this one.

4 Aegis Destroyers is about a quarter of the deployed fleet! (Yes, there are 64 total Burke-class DDGs in service. Roughly 21 of them are deployed at any one time)

That old free rider problem. How does the US get its 'allies' to pay their 'fair share' of defense when everybody knows that Uncle Sam is NOT going to give up being the big dog, that is taking a hike and leaving the 'allies' to fend for themselves? Who is the fool in this scenario?

Something wrong with all the current airfields?
