Been experimenting with rules to get divisions plus on the table and fight historical WWII battles on a club night. Successful game this week, US paras vs German paras with 17SS and US 2nd Armd thrown in, and some beautifully crafted 6mm figures on show. AAR here: link Chris Bloody Big BATTLES! link |

Great subject matter Chris. A buddy of mine bought a ton of the troops offered by Collectors Battlefield in 28mm featured for these Normandy battles, and we want to do some scenarios based on these actions S-SW of Carentan (starting with Ronald Speirs' "Personal Experiences of a Rifle Platoon Leader" report as inspiration). Although we'll be taking a much smaller slice from the pie, at the skirmish level for these encounters, this is a terrific setting for drawing Normandy battle actions from. Btw, the fighting South of Caretan by the US 83rd Infantry Division can also offer up some interesting scenarios too. Thanks for the links! |

Robin: thanks, I'll pass your kind words on to Colin. You'll make him very happy! FlyXWire: glad you enjoyed it. Yes, Normandy just has infinite potential for skirmish-scale actions. A couple of winters back, I toured around some of 29 Inf Div's actions crossing the Aure River, south of Omaha beach. At the time, a lot of the area was flooded. If you go in June, you probably won't see that – but in December it was, and I really got a good sense of what it must have been like back then. Anyway, happy gaming! Chris |

Chris, very cool! I was there in 1973 with my father who was an 82nd Airborne combat veteran (325th Glider Infantry Rgt.). We toured the La Fiere bridgehead battle area too, and it was then in August – dad emphasized that all the low ground (it looked like a valley to my eyes during our visit) was flooded in '44 (I've seen scenarios presented that have the area being open ground – ignoring the whole nature of the causeway battle). Here's one of dad's photos in front of the Cauquigny Church shortly after that horrific battle (on the objective side). It was donated to the 82nd Airborne Association along with other pictures dad took with his pocket camera, thus becoming "open source", and which have now appeared in a number books on Normandy.

Wow – that must have been an amazing trip. What a wonderful thing to be able to do with your dad. |
