Hi all
I'm looking to add some artillery to my small AWI British army, but I'm having a little trouble sorting out what figures(in what hats) are right for me. At this stage I have units based around German town (1777). I have the Mollo/McGregor book that shows gunners in both tricorn & Saratoga cut down light infantry caps?(as in the Warlords plastic Box). The Illustrated encyclopedia show gunners in light infantry caps. Perry's have figures in Saratoga dress, Southern dress & in cap-hats. Front rank and Foundry have gunners in tricorns. Can anyone out there give me some sort of idea of what hat British artillery were wearing around 1777 German town?
cheers

I happen to know that Alan Perry consulted with a number of RA/RIA re-enactors in the US before making these figures, so they should be pretty accurate. I would go with either the Foundry crews with fully-cocked hats (aka tricornes) and maybe replace some of the heads with the "slouch hats" (cocked on left only) from the Perry plastic British infantry box, or maybe the "Southern Dress" packs (AW107 and 108) from the Perry range, with the hats twisted through 90 degrees.

FWIW, I would suggest that the two Perry packs I have listed would most likely be the uniforms worn by gunners attached to the Grenadier and Light Infantry battalions, the Foundry figures to the ordinary line infantry brigades.

Just as a geeky aside, apparently Royal Artillery officers did not wear gorgets.

The Royal Artillery wore both hats and light infantry-type caps during the War of the Revolution. The Royal Irish Artillery is usually portrayed in the latter.

apparently Royal Artillery officers did not wear gorgets.

Pretty smart-in the field in action they make excellent targets.

Gorgets were not part of the RA uniform. They were only worn by infantry officers and Marines.

I am also informed that the RA there (only a handful) were volunteers and served with the 4th Company, like adapting their uniforms to look the same, or changing completely upon the next issue of uniforms.

And not being part of the uniform is pretty smart…

Hmmm. Let me try that second half of my post again since I seemed to have mangled it.

Apparently the Royal Irish Artillery were only volunteers (I want to say, maybe 70 some?) who came over to fight with the 4th Battalion RA. It is likely there were integrated into the 4th and wore the same uniforms – whether in the next issue of clothing or simply adapted what they had.

In what I've read online the figures in warlords plastic AWI artillery box set are said to be interchangeable British or Continental. Would Perry's AW101 & 102 Continental artillery packs with the odd slouch hat added and paint as British work okay or is this pushing it a bit?

The uniforms of both the Continental and Royal Artillery were similar, so I don't see a problem.

The Fife & Drum Miniatures British artillery, which I believe are specific to the Philadelphia campaign, are in the Saratoga cap. My understanding this this line is pretty well-researched.

To my eye the file and Drum figures look to be dressed very similar to the Perry's Saratoga uniform(short coats and cap hats)or am I missing something here?
The pictures are small and my eyes are bad lol.
