Those maps do nothing to show you the real terrain there. It is waaaaay different when you go there. It is filled with rolling hills. LOS is very short in many places. |

d effinger is right. Last year my son and I took two walking tours of Antietam. One was the Sunken Road tour. We followed the guide book we purchased at the gift shop( a must if you want to walk this tour). It explained the different stops and what happened along the way. When you leave the farm, it climbs till you peak out at about 50 to 60 yards from the Sunken Road. The Confederates could see the flags and bayonets coming before the men became visible. The Union was not as lucky, they could see nothing till they crested the hill. So the Reb's knew where the attack was coming from and had first shots. The other terrain that seems to be misinterpreted is The Cornfield. Believe me, it is not flat. Take that walking tour and you will find out. The only thing you have to watch for is the field is loaded with ground hog holes, so watch your steps. |
