So. We're heading for a baseball strike? Way to go, MLB!

With the NFL reeling from so many self inflicted wounds, baseball is gallantly stepping up to the plate to take some of the heat.
The NBA isn't helping itself much either. Every player and team is belligerently hating each other, poised to wipe out all the good will they've cultivated by the NFL's self immolation.

I can feel for all of the players. Being offered only $20 USD million is just so disrespectful.

I'm going to cheer for a sport that is untainted with scandal. Like "Women's" gymnastics.

I have two firm rules which have served me well in such matters for many years.

1. I pay absolutely no attention to athletes unless I have money on the game.

2. I never bet on sporting events.

Neal Smith02 Feb 2018 6:40 p.m. PST

College Basketball/Football and NHL is about all I watch anymore anyway… :)

I always start the Spring watching Baseball, but it gets old. I used to love it!

Narratio02 Feb 2018 8:12 p.m. PST

Sport? What is this 'Sport' you speak of stranger?
Is it anything to do with the colour of cuff buttons on the 2nd mess kit repair section of the Bratislavan 3rd Guards Light Medium Infantry regiment on August 5th 1703? No? Then why pay attention?

Really, over inflated wages and egos of an extreme minority (Population of 300 million plus vs around 5,000 "Professional Athletes") being used as "news".

Lucius02 Feb 2018 8:24 p.m. PST

Find yourself a good minor league team to follow. We have a great AA team in my hometown. Tickets are cheap, domestic beer and hotdogs are $1 USD, or you can get a micro brew for $5. USD

There's not a bad seat in the house, and kids can talk to the players.

nevinsrip02 Feb 2018 8:52 p.m. PST

Baseball…Yawn….ZZZZZZZZ

Hockey is in playoff chase mode.

Don't speak of baseball to me.

They get 3 before they're out, don't they? evil grin

I prefer golf, anyway (though it does need the gopher from Caddyshack… ;-)

Cacique Caribe02 Feb 2018 11:23 p.m. PST

Baseball? That's like golf to me.

I've seen more action watching grass grow.

Dan
PS. Just wake me up when the Weyland-Yutani team comes to play. They'll make sure their players are worth every dime.

I enjoy baseball but stopped watching the NFL when the players started their political antics. Watch hockey & college football also. Cannot tolerate golf, tennis or soccer.

We are fortunate to have an excellent AAA team.

The Durham Bulls (same name as the team from the
film 'Bull Durham,' but a significant upgrade from
that team of almost 5 decades ago, in venue, caliber
of players and administration, and accomplishment).

The Durham Bulls have won several championships over
the past 20 years, are always in contention, field
a good 'product' (caliber of play) and you can go
see a game without breaking the bank ! Venue is
easily accessed and exited !

Beats the heck out of MLB…

Swampking03 Feb 2018 7:39 a.m. PST

Sorry, but what kind of grown man cares about overpaid, whiny children? Seriously, these so-called 'athletes' are paid to entertain, I could care less about their opinions on any subject-play the game, collect your money and shut up.

Having said that, the only 'professional' sports I watch are wrestling, rugby and ski jumping. American professional 'children' could take a few queues from professional ski-jumpers, who are, for the most part, generous with their time to fans and don't open their overpaid pieholes and show how effin' stupid they are!

The NFL – oh, you mean the National Felons League? The NBA – oh yeah, that's as exciting as watching a bunch of a schizophrenic badgers high on angel dust fighting over a hole in the ground. Golf? Who declared this a sport – an 80 year old geriatric with bladder control problems? Soccer – see the NFL, NBA and MLB – about as exciting as watching a bunch of fat people line dancing.

Jeigheff03 Feb 2018 7:41 a.m. PST

I admire athletes, but I don't watch sports. I'm the opposite of my Dad, my brother, and many other people in that way.

genew4903 Feb 2018 8:05 a.m. PST

Don't think there will be a strike. The average player isn't going stay out so a few big salary guys can make even more. The unsigned free agents may create their own Spring Training. I believe teams are saving money for next year's free agents and the contracts will revert back to a players advantage.

Wait, people still like baseball?

Oh right, fogies need something they can keep up with.

(Median age of an MLB viewer: 57 and getting older every year).

Gone Fishing03 Feb 2018 9:19 a.m. PST

It sounds as though sports in general is in an age of transition. This morning's Wall Street Journal has an article discussing the NFL's plummeting ratings; it appears the league's core audience is leaving in droves. How much of this is due to the ongoing antics of the owners and players would be interesting to know.

Maybe soccer will replace them all. (God help us!)

In any case, I'm still looking forward to the Super Bowl tomorrow. Go Eagles!

KSmyth03 Feb 2018 9:37 a.m. PST

I live for baseball and can't wait for pitchers and catchers to report to spring training. Yes the game is awash in cash, and the players get plenty of it, but no team or owner in yearly revenue or team value is losing money.

But baseball also had the freest market of the four major sports, and unfortunately the players were hoodwinked when they agreed to the most recent collective bargaining agreement. Several measures are putting unofficial caps on their ability to bargain wages. The free agent market isn't moving and players are suggesting the same kind of owner collusion that occurred in the 80's

Major League Baseball has suggested it will make unilateral changes to the game without consulting the players--work rule changes.

I don't anticipate a strike any time soon because the current CBA goes through 2021, but it certainly could happen in the future.

I miss the old Circus Maximus. I've always wanted to feed a few folks of a certain fundamentalist persuasion to the lions. I can think of a few disconcerted fans I would like to toss as well.

Dynaman878903 Feb 2018 2:41 p.m. PST

Never could stand professional sports, ANY of them, anyway. How people can spend 2 hours+ watching people throw, kick, carry, or use a stick to move a ball or puck around I never did figure out.

Used to watch Puppy Bowl instead of the super bowl till they ruined that by making it less about the puppies and more about the "hype". Depressing to think that some of the puppies in the first one have probably died of old age by now.

HMS Exeter03 Feb 2018 2:54 p.m. PST

I try to tell people at work. Offering up your support or interest in any sports team is simply signing on to be disappointed 78% of the time.

I used to care about football. When people at work ask me if I follow a team, I say my colors are green and yellow. So they say, "ah, Green Bay.". I say no. Mayflower Movers. 'Cause when they carted the Colts out of Baltimore, my interest went with them.

Lucius03 Feb 2018 3:06 p.m. PST

MLB average viewer age is rising, but minor league attendance has been skyrocketing for a decade. And as parents shy away from football for safety reasons, kids around here have flocked to baseball.

MLB may well be dying, but baseball is thriving.

Zephyr103 Feb 2018 3:36 p.m. PST

"Maybe soccer will replace them all."

Soccer would be more exciting if two balls were in play at the same time instead of one…

KSmyth03 Feb 2018 3:46 p.m. PST

I finishing painting far more figures listening to Seattle Mariners games than I do at any other time of the year.

High school baseball, college baseball, minor league ball, or major league-it's all baseball, all good.

It doesn't matter whether my team is winning or not, they're still the home town team. I watched my home town team leave in 1970 due to a lack of support and it broke my heart. I'll be damned if I contribute to another picking up stakes and leaving.

genew4903 Feb 2018 3:51 p.m. PST

I guess baseball is in my blood as it was with my dad. Being a Mets fan since there were Mets. Having watched games at Shea Stadium, Citi Field and yes, the Polo Grounds. Citi Field is a beautiful Stadium and very fan friendly. What can be better than sitting at the ballpark on a warm summer day, having a cold one and watching top notch players playing the game we all played (or tried to) as kids.
If you're not a baseball guy that's fine, I hope you have as much fun doing what you like as I do with baseball.
Let's Go Mets!

I will watch our local baseball farm team once in a while. The stadium always draws a good crowd, and there a lot of people of all ages in attendance. I went to a woman's basketball game at my alma mater a few days ago. They are a great team that doesn't get the support they deserve. You can walk in and get a good seat for a fraction of the price of a men's game. I wasn't raised with sports-- my dad thought they were a foolish waste of time but, the older I get, the more interested I have become.

robert piepenbrink for the win.

BW195904 Feb 2018 6:59 p.m. PST

I support our local minor league team, single A Dayton Dragons, go to about 8 games a year and they are always packed. Love baseball and I bet you'll see it get more popular in the future.
