Does anyone have data about how many SAGGER systems would be deployed in what size of Infantry formation during the 1973 war? It seems they had 8 missiles per system altho the usual was 4, but how many systems would they have and what formation would they be deployed into, a battalion asset? Company asset? much thanks! |

Does anyone have data about how many SAGGER systems would be deployed in what size of Infantry formation during the 1973 war? Were they a battalion or company asset? How did the Soviets deploy them since they trained the Egyptians and Syrians? much thanks! |

I would highly recommend the new Osprey title, Sagger ATGM vs M-60 main battle tank: "each division included 72 Sagger launchers, with a company of 12 launchers allocated to each brigade and 36 launchers within an anti-tank battalion. There were also Sagger missiles on the BRDM's in the supporting tank brigade. |

That sounds about right Sudwind, from what I remember … And some of the reasons the Egyptians were so effective initially in the '73 war : Layered SAM Umbrella over their forces. Making the IAF less effective. With the SAGGERS, SAMs, etc., their Infantry didn't break and run in the face of IDF Armor. As had happened at times in the other wars. Much to surprise of the IDF's initial Tank attacks in '73. Some losses were heavy to IDF MBTs in the early battles near Suez in the Sinai. Verses what happened on the Syrian Front. With many IDF "Super Shermans" getting a 13-1 kill ratio over the Syrian armor. |

@ Sudwind "each division included 72 Sagger launchers, with a company of 12 launchers allocated to each brigade and 36 launchers within an anti-tank battalion. There were also Sagger missiles on the BRDM's in the supporting tank brigade." 12 launchers per [infantry?] brigade doesn't sound like much. there being 4-5 Battalions with 4-5 companies each, it is barely one launcher per company, is that right? Maybe we can say that they will be concentrated a bit where the action is to be heaviest, and there is 2 per company in a key battle area? |

Look at the picture between page 16 and 17 of the link above, for a typical deployement. 33 sagger equipped vehicles plus suticase missiles and anti-tank units as well. |

Based on the Soviet model of the times, each BTR equipped infantry battalion had an AT platoon equipped with 2 SPG 9 Recoilless Rifles and 4 suitcase sagger launchers, with a further AT missile battery with 9 BRDMs with AT 3 or AT 5 missiles at the regimental level, so I suspect the Egyptian organization would have been similar. |

That IIRC, is true … the USSR and/or the Egyptians would have more that just SAGGERs in their TO&Es for AT assets. |
