He seems to have been a sepoy (i.e. a private) at the time of the action that led to his VC. … So he wouldn't have been wearing havildar stripes, nor likely to be carrying a sword. -Unless this is the Hollywood version.

Two different men. Wargames Illustrated's Havildar Singh fought at the Battle of Saragarhi in 1897, when the future Victoria Cross winner of the same name was only two years old.
