Watched an old episode..(05-06?) Alun Armstrong winds up playing at a wargame club..amidst a sea of passive faces… a glimpse of a Salute poster and a copy of WI at his desk at the cop shop… Any backstory ? |

All I know is that his character had been forced to retire from the force early due to alcoholism and mental issues--something like obsessive/compulsive disorder. The latter maybe dovetails somewhat with wargaming? |

John Treadaway and the South London Warlords were involved. "Cravat man " I think was based on a local(SWUK) wargaming legend. |

I remember articles on this in a wargamer magazine at that time. Wargames illustrated? |

His wife was a wargame widow, and the gamers came off as slightly askew….( what else is new?) … |

There were at least two episodes involving "Memory" Lane and his Prussians. There was an arson case tying in with some sort of micro-convention at a school which led to his getting his own figures out of the attic. I thought the unrealistic bit was getting back in the saddle so easily. No one is explaining that his rules are two editions out of date, or that his basing is wrong, and since he's winning immediately, he clearly doesn't have the usual tactical rust of the out of practice wargamer. Memory Lane of course, but still… Also, I can never get my opponents to drink that much. |

He drank after winning iirc. As mentioned we (Wargamers) don't come out looking good – more like a bunch of wallies. "wally NOUN plural: wallies British informal A silly or inept person. ‘I must have looked a total wally but I didn't care"…" |
