Has anyone ever seen a rule book or game source book that has in line references and citations like a technical/academic paper? What do people think about this concept?

Pictors Studio28 Jan 2018 8:24 a.m. PST

I have seen rulebooks with source material and further reading cited at the end.

I think unless the references are funny or anecdotal they would be very annoying.

In DBA 3.0, there are references given for each of the armies listed. I have purchased a number of books listed for the Biblical, Late Roman and Dark Age armies.

To answer your question, yes, I like the concept.

Bibliography is a given. I'm discussing in line mla formatted notes such as

Wordsworth stated that Romantic poetry was marked by a "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" (263).

I might be misremembering, but I thought Glutter of Ravens had citations. It's been awhile though, so this may not have been the case.

Intriguing idea.

Vigilant28 Jan 2018 9:16 a.m. PST

If it helps the rules why not, otherwise what would be the point?

I think it would be distracting to little gain. What would be the point exactly?

You might have a rule for Romans disordering enemies, reflecting their use of Pila. Would that be a cite, whereby we get directed to a book that explains that?

I don't see the point. I think a "Designers Notes" section at the end is a good way for the author to explain his/her though process.

I think if people use rules/ideas lifted from other sets, a citation at least is appropriate, otherwise I feel rules these days have a lot of unnecessary 'filler' material anyway. Rules, to me, should be as concise as possible.
Citations from, say, ancient sources is (again for me) – largely pointless!

There was a thread on designers notes. The conclusion was that few would read an extensive designers notes. Were we to put a list of citations in our rules it wold cover many US and other Field manuals. Loads of personal histories, game theory and the like as well as past rules sets, an uneconomic and largely unappreciated labour.

UshCha29 Jan 2018 4:09 a.m. PST

Despite our sales noone has asked for such clarifications. Proably as you need to understand how a real army works to be able to fight anyway.

daler240D29 Jan 2018 7:59 a.m. PST

in line references would be ridiculously pretentious and more, unnecessary.
designer notes and endnotes with bibilogrpahy are invaluable.
