"One other comment: The author in the future may want to consider the social merits of continuing to refer to ships as "she." Besides the fact that ships are inanimate objects and cannot have gender anyway, it is offensive to some that these vessels which are almost always controlled by men would be designated as female. While it may be a naval tradition to regard a ship as a "she," it is a tradition worthy of being thrown overboard as we sail into the twenty-first century." Ridiculous. |

cant look at past events with 2018 lenses, the japanese betrayed the white cross flags many times and did horrible things to servicemen and civilians alike. |

Ridiculous. Agreed. Read some asinine things on these boards, but that's a doozy. As far as the article as a whole, I am consistently baffled/amazed/horrified by those who seem to think you can fight a war with no 'civilian' casualties. (Not that that's really the case in this article.) War is horrible. Was then, and it still is. There's a reason even career military men aren't fond of it… |

I wonder if the gender of ships could be pinned to French where everything is either he or she (and I get them wrong half the time). |

Could be, although I suspect the simpler explanation is that sailors came to view their relationships with their vessels as a lot like a relationship with a wife/mother/lover: you had to take care of each other, or neither one would prosper. |

One other comment: The author in the future may want to consider the social merits of continuing to refer to ships as "she." And the commentator showing his gross ignorance. Not all nations use the feminine. Some use the masculine and some use neither. |
