I'd second the motion on "Playing at the World" it is an excellent well-written history of the whole wargaming hobby up to the creation of Dungeons and Dragons. |

Of Dice and Men is well-written and enjoyable. I seem to recall a few minor errors in certain details related to specific editions, which I knew from having been a player in the early '80s, but over all it's an interesting history of Gygax, Arneson, D&D and especially the disaster that imploded TSR. I recommend it. I'm going to look for Playing at the World and Empire of Imagination next. |

Seeing histories of D&D like these make me feel old – I started with 1st edition back when it was new. Thanks, guys! |

Hawk & Moor is a bit too detailed, but quite enjoyable. It contains a lot of stories about the ACTUAL early role playing sessions of Gygax and friends. |

I thought "Of Dice and Men" underestimated the availability of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Martian series and the Conan series as preparing the ground for D&D; Not even sure if he mentioned Fritz Lieber. I know I had read them at some point before I met D&D at Gencon in 1974; What was really interesting was how little interest the Docent (?) at "Gencon 50" had in how non-D&D Gencon WAS then, they had a little display with a couple of Minitanks and figures and a copy of Tractics, but no explanatory text. |
