….Choosing Rey's Parents for The Last Jedi "The revelation of Rey's lineage in Star Wars: The Last Jedi has been one of its biggest points of contention. It was a question raised in The Force Awakens, hotly debated in the years after, and played as a red herring in the movie itself. However, when the answer finally came, some viewers felt the payoff was a letdown. But in case you thought otherwise, director Rian Johnson gave this one a lot of thought…." Main page

What a waste. So much potential pissed away. |

Then he's not capable of careful thinking. If the answer to the big mystery is a mundane, boring let-down, you've screwed up as a writer, unless you're writing a mundane, contemporary angst story. |

The Last Jedi was one complete letdown & effectively killed off my interest in any future Star Wars. What an utter load of tripe it turned out to be. |

Her parents could still be special. Look at crazy old Ben Kenobi. Who on Tatooine thought he was a Jedi? (Other than Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, that is) So it's possible that the two "nobodies" were, in fact, someone powerful in deep cover/disguise. After all, Luke was under cover on Darth Vader's home planet, and Leia on Alderaan, for 18 years or so, without anyone knowing they were Anakin Skywalker's kids. |

Why would her parents have to be some "special folks in hiding", is it bad that someone special can come from humble beginnings? |

I'm glad her parents turned out to be nobodies. Had she been related to Luke or Obi-Wan it would have been sooooooo predictable. Kudos to Rian Johnson for not giving in to "fan service." I really hope Abrams doesn't compromise his artistic integrity and let the fans dictate the direction of SW in the third installment. Surprise us, JJ. Dave, part-time movie blogger: link |

Except, Dave, the mystery was set up in Ep 7 to be a major future plot point, and instead in Ep 8 we get a ho-hum "never mind" in what is almost a throw-away bit of dialogue. Plus, Star Wars is an epic space opera, not an exploration of real life. The choices, mysteries and events are supposed to be big and momentous, especially when the previous narrative sets them up to be so. As for Patrick's note of "humble beginnings," no, there's nothing wrong with that, and yes, that could have been done for Rey, from the start. Humble beginnings make a great story, too. But again, the narrative in Ep 7 didn't set that up and implicitly went against it, giving Rey a deliberately mysterious origin that created world-wide buzz (not to mention a great piece of story arc)…and then Rian Johnson decides to treat it all like a used tissue. "Oh, no, she's nobody special." Oh, okay. Bored now. Walking away. Maybe it would be different if Rian had given us a character to actually care about who has a reason for pursuing a future and fighting for right, but he didn't do that, either. I left Episode 7 interested to learn about Finn and Rey and see their story progress together (less so about the Emo twit Kylo). I left Ep 8 not caring what happens to any of them. |

Then don't read too much into it. Red herrings are known to occur in movies from time to time. Especially JJ Abrams stories. |

It's Disney-era star wars and the original trilogy and prequels are a resource for them to plunder to make the films look like star wars. I'm ok(ish) with how the story is developing but it's quality of storytelling and their ability to execute ideas that's letting it down. I agree with mrwrigglesworth they're wasting an amazing opportunity to make a modern classic when they've got all the tools and all the money they need. How can you stuff that up? |
Zephyr1 | 26 Jan 2018 3:35 p.m. PST |
Hey, could be worse. Rey could be related to Jar-Jar Binks… ;-) |

I think Rey is from Krypton. A re-skinned Supergirl seems appropriate to the character. |

Her parents were never revealed. All you got was what the Kylo Ren stated and he is a Sith and anything he says cannot be trusted. |
John Leahy | 26 Jan 2018 8:31 p.m. PST |
I agree with Mithmee. My kids asked me about it after the movie. i said the exact same thing. He's Sith and already been playing head games with her. Trust nothing he says. Thanks. John |

Rey is actually Cindel. Noa and Wickett left her on Jakku to develop her force powers. |

Playing star wars battlefront 2 I was quite convinced for a while that she's the daughter of ex-imperial-inferno-squad-members-gone-rogue Iden Versio and Del Meeko. Two battle-hardened elite soldiers who (when they stayed under the radar for a number of years) would be the perfect match for the description of Rey's parents in the movie. |

Lets hope they have some interesting reveals about Rey yet to come. At this point there is no where to go but up. Well the last movie did serve to make the prequels seem better. TomT |
