I expected a miniature army, I know a Napoleonic one is costly, and they don't eat anything so I don't have to feed them. |

You know, there are several decent books on medieval armies and military service, often including wages and such. A pity the concept of paper is lost on so many of the digital generation. |

Here, for instance. link That one's 1300-1500. But there's some nice stuff available in print in English at least from Henry II of England onward. Henry instituted scutage, which gets right to what a knight's service was worth, and Henry and his sons were serious employers of mercenaries. But our enquiring mind would have to stop posting on the Net long enough to go to a library and check out a book. Like this one: France, John, ed. Mercenaries and Paid Men: The Mercenary Identity in the Middle Ages; Proceedings of a Conference Held at University of Wales, Swansea, 7th–9th July 2005. Leiden, The Netherlands, and Boston: Brill, 2008. |

What are these "books" you speak of? |

Oh, Perris, you'll love them! Made out of entirely recyclable materials, immune to all current spyware and malware, no advertising, kindle can't remove them from your device, and Microsoft can never tell you your old book won't work unless you buy new software from them. I think they may catch on. |

I was expecting the "depends on the scale" comment. |

A medieval army seems to cost between 12 and 1000 points depending on the rules you choose… Hehe. |

In the case of an English army in France, it depends on how much you can defray costs be stealing everything that isn't nailed down… |

And amazingly enough people in remote areas without ready access to extensive libraries or the finances to afford buying lots of references can access the Internet relatively cheaply. They can even use that Internet to discover and track down books that they may wish to add to their libraries… |
