I'm (Upper)Canadian. So yeah, I've always cheered the redcoats in the AWI not-so-seriously. Really when one digs into the (Canadian) history of it, in contrast to the rather one-sided contemporary US account, it all comes off as a rather brutal little civil war with rotten behaviour on both sides. Given some of the Patriot/Congessional actions in the AWI (ie. 'lynch law', African slavery, persecution of religious minorities, masacre and rapine in the Mohawk Valley, general rowdyism and appropriation of property etc.) you can certainly see how some folks ended up going Loyalist (ie. future Canadians). Also John Graves Simcoe rocked: Commanded the Queen's Rangers, bayonetted a load of Yanks, Created Upper Canada, banned slavery, boosted Toronto, called it York, then nonsensically named everything elsein the province after places in England that bear little or no resemblance to their namesakes. Corking! Now that I think about it, I should head over to Perry's Miniatures and start up that AWI project of my dreams… |

Yes, Simcoe was like Tarleton … in many Yanks eyes … Both not very well liked … |

Just because the redcoats are terrorists doesn't preclude the Sons of LIberty from being the brownshirts of their day. |

Mmm yes, I concur. Reading the history it seems like many a Patriot or Loyalist's proclivity was determined by which side they had a negative experience with first and subsequent self-defense, as opposed to interest in political ideals. |

"Just because the redcoats are terrorists doesn't preclude the Sons of Liberty from being the brownshirts of their day." Yes miniMO, hence my reference to the importance of that thin red line of heroes that protects the rest of us from getting covered in all that shite. I probably should have said "DIRTY, smelly and foreign types that would otherwise oppress us." How can I have been so inaccurate? Please accept my humblest apologies. |
