Ironically, when the British Army mechanised in the mid-1930s, many of the horses retired from service at that time were sold to Germany, where they ended up pulling artillery and other vehicles. Some were spotted by British servicemen captured during the fighting in France in 1940. For all those who belittle Haig for being "out of touch" when, in 1925, he told an audience (principally drawn from the Royal Army Veterinary Corps) that military horses still had a future, it's worth noting that the TOE of a German infantry division in WW2 included 2,300 horses and a battalion of 400+ men to look after them. Elite units of the Rhodesian Army were still using horses to ride to – and sometimes into – battle in 1979. |
