Yeah, These are getting better all the time……..but he told me not to bother with my planned conversion to make a kettledrummer for French Carabiniers a Cheval…for the Napoleonic Era.

No need he said. Strong hint.

"Nous sommes trahis" they cried at Waterloo (well the French did anyway)

Now I cry "Moi Aussi"

Still, I think there is still a heart at Gringos40 that beats Napoleonic….the latest figure of Dorsenne suggests that.

Liam…………….your quite right.once smitten never forgotten……….I didn't sit through 1970 Waterloo twice for nuffing!! ……..just made the last train home,

more Indo-China en route with a hint of Napoleonic back flavour !

Mad Guru16 Apr 2018 3:39 p.m. PST

But what of a hint of more Camerone Legionnaires… more Imperial and/or Republican Mexicans… more of Maximillian anything?

Please don't take my desperate pleading the wrong way, Ged! It's your company and entirely your call and you must do what you want to do, across however many periods you find yourself interested in.

It's just that Camerone Day is just around the corner (April 30th) and I can't help myself!

They are getting very colourful, these chaps. Ged tells me this one is in Tangerine….I had thought more like Satsuma, but thinking about it, that is Japanese anyway……..

Just seen the photo of the French infantryman in my latest copy of The Foreign Correspondent.
Absolutely brilliant and one wonders how they fought with all that equipment on their back.
The figure captures the flavour of the period.
Also saw two photos of the range in Wargames Illustrated.

Gringos goes from strength to strength.
Brilliant figures and range Ged.

Best Wishes davejl

Some "work in progress" on the Tonkin 1885 range..first of the French navy ships is the "Revolver" a gunboat with shallow draft used in north Vietnamese estuaries with great success against the Black Flags. Crew are being painted and the guns need painting and work done on the setting.

Also three pictures of a French officer commanding the Tonkinese rifles. It seems a lot of these chaps wore this splendid uniform in 1885!

To quote Ged;
"a French torpedoboat 1885, the torpedo is at the front. It was fired at an enemy junk..most effective". I can well imagine as much of a hazard to the crew of this boat in practice!

Makes for a very nice model though

picture

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP25 Jun 2018 6:12 a.m. PST

To quote Ged;

"Another boat for Gringos40 French Colonial Tonkin navy..
the French used old whaling boats in a quite clever
manner ,as due to lack of time and equipment "in situ"
they produced improvised Torpedo boats…at the front
was a pole positioned on a lever with a "large charge"
attached. The attack on the very large junks
would involve full steam being achieved, then the
captain and the few Fusilier marines on board would
steer the boat flat out towards the nominated target
in the dead of night..Hence the outer charcoal black paint
being used!…and get as close as possible and "drop" the
bomb and make off at full speed.

The results were impressive
..in one attack by two boats one boat was badly shot up
..many crew wounded ..the other managed to press home
the attack and blow a huge hole in a gigantic junk which eventually
sank. The Junks struggled to depress their cannons and
their rifle fire was not always accurate. If they even managed to detect
the "stealth" craft. Later replaced by the Torpedo boat already shown…boys own stuff
in many ways!"

Raving lunatics I would have said. Kamikaze, several decades in advance.

Further releases and I do have to say the French were looking a bit outnumbered
Here are 8 pictures of Ged's latest swath of Tonkin figures to be released in about 10-15 days..loads more en route, I am assured.

Two are "Fusilier Marines".Then come more Legionnaires

The two with funny hats are Tirailleurs Tonkinois which can be used as Tirailleurs Annamites. Basically north Vietnamese riflemen who fought for the French.

I stress all the above is straight from la mouche du cheval!

Now these do impress me. Great modelling and painting skill and very imaginative and novel. To quote Ged

"The gunboat crew for the Revolver French gunboat. The chap on right is firing the Hotchkiss 37mm revolver Gatling cannon..The guy far right is turning a handle on the forward 80mm rifled cannon. The Captain? Well, looking splendidly Gallic methinks! Vive la France!"
