Ged of Gringos40 sent me some pictures from his new Tonkin range. Covers the French intervention in Vietnam/Indochina 1882-85

There are a few of a "special", a French legionnaire, having a fag and leaning on his Gras bolt action rifle. I love the mass of equipment he carries (rarely shown in models), not to mention a liberated trophy!

The other is, I am told, a "black flag" trumpeter blowing the oversized trumpet they favoured!

Ged has just sent me two more images to post, showing a very ambitious new departure for Gringos40. Two boats he has just commissioned for the Tonkin conflict.

I am told one is the "Revolver", a Jules Verne style gunboat, armed to the teeth with Hotchkiss, Gatlings, light machine guns and even a cannon of about 80mm. That looks like a seriously armoured prow as well.

The other is Torpedo Boat 44, armed with…well a torpedo I guess. What we nowadays understand of course as applying to a self propelled explosive projectile…not a "Damn the etc".

I guess these are the forerunners of the Brown Water Navy that sailed the Delta in the 60s?

Absolutely amazing. This British figure is so well sculpted and you almost feel sorry for him, carrying all that equipment. Where do you get there fantastic ideas from Ged?

Best Wishes davejl

much appreciated comments thanks
French foreign legion often had
their backpack carried by coolies
in Tonkin…when these deserted
or perished carried their own up to
eighty pounds in ninety percent humidity!!

Inspired work

Happy Wanderer27 Jan 2018 12:59 p.m. PST

Hi Ged,

This looks very promising.

Will we be treated to a selection of skirmish figures ala advancing, firing and loading and marching ie a nice spread of 12 figs for skirmish gaming aka The Men Who Would Be Kings.

I think this would be good marketing as two armies in that rule system proabbly needs up to 200figs or so for both sides…from about 24-32 sculpts or so.

…is that the idea?

your getting close to my vision for this period

a very large skirmish games in essence!

………..14 Black figures already in the mix!

Happy Wanderer27 Jan 2018 11:27 p.m. PST

Nice work Ged,

I'm sure you'll sell more and have player interest up by doing those few more sculpts and making it a lower level personalised gaming period like other colonial conflicts..classic TSATF type stuff…

…good work, looking forward to seeing this range pan out….👏👏

All I can say is how much guts and courage it takes to invest, what must be a significant gamble, into a "minority" interest topic like this.

Figures of this quality, in the Napoleonic Era, you would be putting down the deposit on the St Tropez villa by now…but then the snag is everyone does post Bardin French infantry with shouldered firearms……

There must be a real art in spotting what is commercially viable and will earn the odd Shekel…to keep the proverbial head above water.

The Legionnaire's backpack is just inspired I think.

thanks for the vote of support Liam……
there are a few suprises in store for this
period as I have spread my creative net wide..
found some memoires of a French Marine officer
who was there and hand drew maps that are spellbinding
in detail and contain a lot of fresh and interestingt
information, getting the detail right is important..
more to follow

I can just imagine your marine officer thinking " Now, what shall we do for the forthcoming Tet holiday? I know, I have always wanted to visit Hue…….Now we have a boat, why not?."

Well he might save you the work.

Surely the most ambitious project yet………..the plan it seems is to create summat based on these images of typical junks of the era.

So back to the torpedo boat idea.

Somehow I thought we were not talking about a "Fire One" from a tube idea.

No, this is a spar torpedo. I saw the gadget projecting from the prow above but thought "No, surely not". I must confess I would want a much longer pole and ask for volunteers to deputise for me.

Two more pics from Ged;

looks good………….just covers Marine troops
which is great as information is sparse.
never fear………
writing a full book on the period covering all
arms…original artwork is underway by Gary Zaboly
in New York and a lot of work has been done. Its aimed
at Wargamers/collectors ..packed with uniform details
battle plans..orders of battle…all you will ever need.
but its a huge project..hopefully 2018/19
